VIENNA – (WMAL) Virginia State Police said Sunday a 12-year-old boy was in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, following a suicide attempt that ended up killing a driver on Interstate 66 Saturday afternoon.

The boy jumped off the Cedar Lane overpass in Vienna, near the Nutley Street exit, at around 4 p.m. Saturday, police said. The impact killed 22-year-old Marisa Harris of Olney. A male passenger in Harris’ car was able to take control of the steering wheel and drive to the shoulder. Harris was dead when police arrived, they said. The passenger was uninjured.

The boy was taken to the hospital with injuries that were considered life-threatening, according to police.

The overpass has a high fence installed over Metro’s Orange Line tracks, which run down the median of the highway. There is only a short railing over the road lanes.
