WASHINGTON — And you thought the days of Metro “Safetrack-style” station closings were over.

Metro suspended Red Line service between Silver Spring and Fort Totten on Saturday, and will keep that stretch closed through Sunday December 10th while it replaces a mainline interlocking, a location where trains cross from one track to the other.

Metro says the work was scheduled between Thanksgiving and the winter holidays when ridership is lighter.

During the closing, the Silver Spring and Fort Totten stations will remain open, while the Takoma station remains closed. Free shuttle buses will be available to bridge the gap for customers with no other travel alternatives. Metro advises customers to allow additional travel time and expect some crowding as trains will arrive less frequently than normal.
