WASHINGTON (WMAL) – It’s a problem many teachers encounter – whether to friend and follow their students on social media. The board of education for Frederick County Public Schools is considering a policy to guide social media use by teachers.
The policy would bar teachers from friending students on Facebook and would require them to keep separate accounts for personal and private use. Professional accounts would be monitored for appropriate use by school officials.
“We’ve seen instances where people don’t know how to put up that boundary,” said Superintendent Dr. Teresa Alban.
Board member Colleen Cusimano said a lot of teachers and students have good relationships, but the policy is necessary because sometimes boundaries are crossed.
The policy under consideration would also prohibit teachers from posting content that would negatively impact their ability to do their jobs, and libeling or defaming students, parents, colleagues and board of education members.
