Amazon names DC, Northern Virginia and Montgomery County as finalists for 2nd headquarters [Fox 5 DC]

Amazon has named the District, Northern Virginia and Montgomery County among the 20 finalists for its new second headquarters.

The company said it expects to invest more than $5 billion in construction and the new headquarters would create 50,000 jobs. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has said the new headquarters would be “a full equal” to the company’s current headquarters in Seattle.

Cities are in fierce competition to lure Amazon, and the company said last year that it received 238 proposals. Officials from Virginia, Maryland and the District were said to be aggressively pursuing  Amazon.

Most of the cities that made the shortlist were located along the East Coast and in the Midwest. The full list of finalists include [Read More]

Beyer Blasts Bill Renaming Gravelly Point Park for Nancy Reagan [ARLnow.com]

Rep. Don Beyer (D) criticized a bill that would rename Gravelly Point Park for former First Lady Nancy Reagan as it passed a U.S. House of Representatives committee earlier today.

The bill failed once in the House Natural Resources Committee, but then was brought up again and passed 18-16 on a party-line vote.

It now heads to the House floor for debate and a final vote, with similar actions required by the U.S. Senate before it can be signed into law by President Donald Trump.

But Beyer, a committee member whose district includes Arlington County, took exception to the efforts to rename the park near Reagan National Airport’s main runway as Nancy Reagan Memorial Park. The bill, H.R. 553, is sponsored by Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) and has 51 Republican co-sponsors. [Read More]

The agreement on CHIP is a key part of Republican leadership’s plan to keep the government open past Friday.

“CHIP should be part of a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension!” Trump tweeted Thursday morning. [Read More]

Trump protecting medical providers who oppose abortion (Fox News)

Moving to solidify its credentials with social conservatives, the Trump administration is creating an office to protect the religious rights of medical providers, including those who oppose abortion.

The announcement Thursday by the Department of Health and Human Service drew immediate criticism from Democrats who said it could undermine the rights of women, gays and transgender people.

The new division will be part of the HHS Office of Civil Rights, which enforces federal anti-discrimination and privacy laws. The administration said it will focus on enforcing conscience and religious protections already part of federal law. No new efforts to expand such protections were announced. [Read More]

The YouTube videos your children watch can exert more of an influence on their career ambitions than their own parents, a new Fatherly and New York Life survey of more than 1,000 children under the age of 12 found.

Survey: Media kids watch top influence for kids’ career choices

Television, movies, and online video streaming sites like YouTube were U.S. children’s top listed influencer on their career choices, beating out personal passions, parents, school, and books as influencers.
