FREDERICKSBURG — At some point, you just have to throw in the towel – in this case, into a giant vat of disinfectant.
The flu bug has struck Fredericksburg Christian School so hard, that administrators made the decision to close both of the school’s campuses on Friday.
In a note posted to the school’s Facebook page, administrators wrote:
This decision was based on:
-the significant number of staff members who are home sick
-the number of substitute teachers that are also ill
-the number of students who are absent – this number has steadily increased over the last several days and is even increasing as this day moves forward
-the ability for our cleaning crew to do a more extensive disinfecting of both campuses
The school recognized the inconvenience that the closing is causing families with healthy students, but said it’s hopeful that a thorough cleaning and a long weekend will curb the spread of infection and lead to fewer sick days for students and staff going forward.
Health officials across the region have reported this flu season to be exceptionally aggressive, in part because the flu shots this year did not prove to be particularly effective. Earlier this week, the Archdiosese of Washington sent out an informal advisory to its pastors, urging them to take measures to avoid the spread of the flu virus, including avoiding handshaking and in some cases limiting some communion practices.
