BALTIMORE — Be ready to #knowyourwhy, Charm City.
Former Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has signed a one-year deal to join the Baltimore Ravens.
Griffin, who was taken by the Redskins with the second pick in the 2012 draft, led the Redskins to the NFC East title in his first season, and was named the NFL’s Rookie of the Year.
Griffin’s rep as toast of the town was short-lived. A devastating knee injury during the Redskins’ playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks led to a quick downfall, exacerbated by run-ins with then-head coach Mike Shanahan. By 2015, Kirk Cousins had claimed the Redskins’ quarterback job, and RGIII was gone.
Griffin played one season with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, but injuries and a lack of vision to read defenses did RGIII in again, and he was cut. Griffin had one tryout in the 2017 off-season, but did not play last year.
He will backup Joe Flacco in Baltimore, assuming he makes the team this summer. Ravens officials said at a news conference Wednesday that Griffin’s signing will not keep the team from choosing another quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft.
Griffin issued this response to his signing on Twitter:
