Tuesday, June 12, 2018

Hosts: Mary Walter and Vince Coglianese

5am – A/B/C/D  North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula’ after Trump-Kim summit (Fox News ) – President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a document on Tuesday stating that Pyongyang would work toward “complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula”— a historic concession, which was one of the requirements the U.S. sought at the summit in Singapore.  The historic agreement came after the two leaders held several meetings throughout the day. Trump was asked by a reporter if Kim agreed to denuclearize and he said, “We are starting that process very quickly.”  Trump did not refer to the document as a treaty or agreement.  Trump said at a press conference that he will be ending joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.  He also said Kim agreed to destroy a ‘major’ missile testing site, but did not offer specific details.  The joint declaration states that the U.S. has committed to providing “security guarantees” to Pyongyang.

5am – E Capitals parade a welcome chance to cheer for DC sports fans (ABC News) – Nicklas Backstrom dreamed about the road less traveled.  Driving down Constitution Avenue on his way to each home game since his NHL debut in 2007, he imagined the street lined with overjoyed Washington Capitals fans.  “It always popped up in my head that one time we’re going to have a parade here, and finally that day is here,” Backstrom said.  It all becomes reality Tuesday when Backstrom and the Stanley Cup-champion Capitals give the city its first parade for a major pro sports team since the NFL’s Redskins in 1992. The parade is 26 years in the making for Washington sports fans who endured long, lean years of heartbreak.  “I don’t think anyone doubted what this city would do,” longtime Nationals infielder Ryan Zimmerman said. “It’s just a matter of getting there and having the ability to do it. They definitely held up their end of the bargain.”

6am – A  INTERVIEW — Francesca Chambers – White House Correspondent for Daily Mail — located in Singapore to recap the North Korea summit and President Trump’s press conference.

6am – B/C North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula’ after Trump-Kim summit (Fox News ) – President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a document on Tuesday stating that Pyongyang would work toward “complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula”— a historic concession, which was one of the requirements the U.S. sought at the summit in Singapore.  The historic agreement came after the two leaders held several meetings throughout the day. 6am – D  INTERVIEW – Hans von Spakovsky – former counsel to the assistant attorney general for civil rights in the Justice Department, former FEC commissioner, and senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation – discussed yesterday’s SCOTUS decision

6am – E Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby help Jimmy Fallon do a Cup keg stand on ‘The Tonight Show’ (Washington Post) – What do you do when you’re a Stanley Cup winner with a day to spare between a weekend-long celebratory bender and your team’s victory parade? Why, you take a quick trip to New York to go on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” of course!  Well, not all of the Capitals made an appearance on the late-night show Monday, but two of their most noteworthy members did, and Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby were only too happy to help Fallon recreate the Russian star’s Saturday keg stand in which he slurped some beer from the Cup. Jockey Mike Smith, fresh off riding Justify to just the 13th Triple Crown in horse racing history, was also on hand to join the festivities.  Coming on stage after segments with guests Jim Parsons and Marlon Wayans, both Ovechkin and Holtby were dressed casually for their appearance, the former in a gray, zippered hoodie with a Nike T-shirt underneath and the latter in a denim jacket that looked far more natty in comparison. Fallon introduced them by showing some clips from the Caps’ Cup-sealing Game 5 triumph against the Golden Knights, including Ovechkin’s goal and Devante Smith-Pelly’s remarkable effort that tied the game in the third period.  Once the pair were ensconced on the couch, Fallon produced a copy of Sports Illustrated that showed a grinning Ovechkin with the Cup on its cover. Describing it as “something pretty cool,” Ovi then got a laugh by adding, “Good-looking guy, why not?”

6am – F Virginia Primary Puts Democrats’ Spirit of ’17 to the Test (New York Times) – For Democrats in Virginia, the legend of last year’s general election, when the party romped statewide, has been burnished to a golden glow. If there is a blue wave nationally in the midterms, many will look back to Virginia in 2017 as an early sign.  But the state is going to the polls again for primaries on Tuesday, at a moment when some analysts suggest that the wave could be flattening to a ripple. President Trump’s job approval rating has ticked up and the unemployment rate is the lowest in nearly two decades.  Whether Democrats’ zeal to rebuke Mr. Trump remains strong will be closely scrutinized as Virginians vote in contested primaries for nine of the state’s 11 congressional seats. The Center for Politics at the University of Virginia calls it the busiest federal Primary Day in the state’s modern history.  The results will be sifted for hints of what to expect in this state and across the country in November, when Democrats hope to win control of the House of Representatives as a check on what they see as an increasingly reckless White House.

The president and his administration send their thoughts and prayers to Larry and his family.”  Judy Kudlow, his wife, told the Washington Post’s Robert Costa that her husband is “doing fine,” adding that the doctors at Walter Reed National Medical Center “are fabulous.” Costa reports that Kudlow is “up and talking” and had spoken on the phone with his friend, the economist Art Laffer.
