5am – A/B/C Caravan migrants break Guatemala border fence, rush Mexico (AP NEWS) Migrants traveling in a mass caravan burst through a Guatemalan border fence and streamed by the thousands toward Mexican territory on Friday, defying Mexican authorities’ entreaties for an orderly crossing and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of retaliation. On the Mexican side of a border bridge, they were met by a phalanx of police with riot shields. About 50 managed to push their way through before officers unleashed pepper spray and the rest retreated.
5am – D ‘Transgender’ Could Be Defined Out of Existence Under Trump Administration (New York Times) The Trump administration is considering narrowly defining gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth, the most drastic move yet in a governmentwide effort to roll back recognition and protections of transgender people under federal civil rights law. A series of decisions by the Obama administration loosened the legal concept of gender in federal programs, including in education and health care, recognizing gender largely as an individual’s choice and not determined by the sex assigned at birth. The policy prompted fights over bathrooms, dormitories, single-sex programs and other arenas where gender was once seen as a simple concept. Conservatives, especially evangelical Christians, were incensed.
5am – E Canada is running out of marijuana two days after drug became legal (Independent) Canadians were so excited about getting their hands on some legal, recreational marijuana the country is reportedly experience a shortage. Police were called to help shops struggling to handle long queues and with frustrated people unable to buy cannabis. Bill Blair, a former Toronto police chief who has led the government’s legalisation programme, told public broadcaster CBC the country was unable to supply enough to meet demand.
6am – A/B/C You could get $6,000 a year under this California senator’s new plan (Sacramento Bee) American families making less than $100,000 a year could be eligible for a monthly tax credit of up to $500, or $6,000 a year, under new legislation announced Thursday by Democratic U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris of California. Individuals making less than $50,000 would be eligible for up to $250 a month, $3,000 a year.
6am – D Saudi Arabia acknowledges Jamal Khashoggi died in consulate, says 18 detained (NBC News) Saudi Arabia acknowledged for the first time on Friday evening that journalist Jamal Khashoggi died in its consulate in Istanbul, and said 18 Saudi citizens have been arrested, according to an initial investigation by the Saudi government. In an announcement made early Saturday in Riyadh, the Saudi general prosecutor also claimed that Khashoggi, who was critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was involved in a “quarrel and fighting by hand” which led to his death.
6am – E Beto is being sued for Spam Texts (Star Telegram) A class action lawsuit filed against the Beto for Texas campaign claims the organization sent text messages to Texans without obtaining their permission, violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
6am – F Texas Dems ask noncitizens to register to vote, send applications with citizenship box pre-checked (The Washington Times) The Texas Democratic Party asked non-citizens to register to vote, sending out applications to immigrants with the box citizenship already checked “Yes,” according to new complaints filed Thursday asking prosecutors to see what laws may have been broken. The Public Interest Legal Foundation alerted district attorneys and the federal Justice Department to the pre-checked applications, and also included a signed affidavit from a man who said some of his relatives, who aren’t citizens, received the mailing.

All eyes were on the latest drawing Friday night, when the jackpot was at an already mind-boggling $1 billion. However, with no ticket matching all six numbers drawn — 15, 23, 53, 65, 70 and Mega Ball 7 — the grand prize now swells to $1.6 billion. On Saturday the Powerball jackpot also continued to swell, reaching $620 million, after no tickets matched all six numbers (16, 54, 57, 62, 69, and Powerball 23). The next Mega Millions drawing is at 11 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday, with the Powerball drawing on Wednesday.
