PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY (WMAL) — The Prince George’s County Police Department says it has suspended 11 officers after a gun was unintentionally discharged at a private holiday party, injuring two officers

Jennifer Donelan with Prince George’s County Police said that 11 off-duty officers were in the house at the time. “That’s why 11 off-duty Prince George’s County Police Officers have been suspended at this time,” she added.

Both officers were transported to hospitals and were released Sunday morning

According to a statement from the department, the officers were at a holiday party Saturday evening in Brandywine when one shot was accidentally fired from a privately-owned handgun. One officer received a hand injury, while another was hit by the bullet’s ricochet.

It is unknown how the gun was unintentionally fired, but the Prince George’s County Police Special Investigation Response Team (SIRT) of their Internal Affairs Division has launched an investigating.

John Teletchea, President of the Prince George’s County Fraternal Order of Police said that all 11 officers were being suspended in a non-disciplinary way as the investigation continues. He added that all 11 officers are currently represented by the Fraternal Order of Police.

The police union only represents officers up to the rank of lieutenant.
