WASHINGTON (WMAL) – A Gainesville man who was looking to steal stuff from cars wound up in the hospital instead of in the money.

Around 2 a.m. Saturday someone called Prince William County Police to report hearing a man yelling he had been shot. When they got to the area of Paper Birch Lane and Crimson Crossing Way, they found 25-year-old Rory Bryan suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

At first, Sgt. Jonathan Perok said Bryan wasn’t being cooperative. Police soon found out why he wasn’t being forthcoming with information about the shooting. Once he got to the hospital, Bryan admitted to police he had been rummaging through unlocked cars when he found a gun, which somehow went off and hit him in the leg.

Bryan’s been charged with reckless handling of a firearm, grand larceny, petty larceny, trespassing into vehicles and providing false information to police.
