The Covington Rorschach Test (Townhall)

Sometimes, a three-point celebration is just a three-point celebration. Sometimes, a pep rally is just a pep rally. Sometimes, a smile is just a smile. And sometimes, a hat is just a hat.

Only among the most deranged partisans could a universal sports ritual, a common high school activity, a typical teen face and patriotic headgear be construed as evil symbols of patriarchal oppression. [Read More]

Democrats block Trump’s plan to end shutdown, fund border wall (Washington Examiner)

Senate Democrats on Thursday blocked President Trump’s proposal to end the government shutdown by trading border wall funding for “Dreamer” protections.

The bill needed 60 votes to advance, but it failed 50-47. The only Democrat who was voting for it was Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, and two Republicans voted against Trump’s plan: Tom Cotton of Arkansas, and Mike Lee of Utah.

The measure would have funded until the end of the fiscal year all of departments and agencies that have been partially closed since Dec. 22, and would have provided $5.7 billion for a wall along the southwest border. In a bid to pick up Democratic votes, it also included a provision extending for three years all legal protections for “Dreamers” and others here under the Temporary Protected Status program. Trump Makes the Right Decision for Venezuela (Bloomberg)

Give Donald Trump credit. On Wednesday the U.S. president recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s interim president. At least a dozenother countries in the Western Hemisphere have since followed suit.

There were signs that such a move was in the works. Senior U.S. officials had declared as illegitimate the 2018 election that gave President Nicolas Maduro a second term. On Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence released a videopledging U.S. support for popular protests against Maduro. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Latin American heads of state earlier this month to further isolate Maduro’s regime. [Read More]

Senate rejects Trump immigration-shutdown bill, also defeats Dems’ option without border security (The Washington Times)

The Senate on Thursday rejected President Trump’s immigration compromise to grant temporary legal status to 1 million migrants and allocate money for his border wall, then rejected Democrats’ alternative to reopen the government without any new border money.

The dueling votes left the month-old shutdown stalemate no closer to a conclusion, though they did give a sense for which side has the upper hand.

Neither proposal achieved the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster, but the Democratic plan did better, getting 52 to the Trump plan’s 50 votes. [Read More]

CNN’s Acosta to write book about Trump’s media battles (The Hill)

CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta is writing a book about the Trump administration and its contentious relationship with the media.
The Harper imprint of HarperCollins Publishers made the announcement Thursday, saying the book will be titled, “The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America.”
“Acosta, the most visible member of the media branded an ‘enemy of the people’ by President Trump, exposes the tumultuous and dangerous realities of the current White House and its war on truth and the first amendment,” Harper said in its announcement. “Going inside the briefing room and onto Air Force One with the White House press corps, Acosta reveals the conversations, battles, and near-constant conflict that define life for a media working to hold the Trump administration accountable for its actions and its words.” [Read More]
