WASHINGTON (WMAL) – After years of work and an international manhunt, Fairfax County Police have tracked down and arrested a man wanted for shooting two people to death in 2016.
Yohannes Nessibu, 24, was extradited to the U.S. from Ethiopia May 3 and arrested and charged with killing 22-year-old Henok Yohannes, and 22-year-old Kedest Simeneh. Yohannes’ body was found inside his home on Blarney Court in Springfield on Dec. 22, 2016. Hours later, Simeneh’s body was found in the backyard of a home on Cordwood Court in Burke.
Maj. Ed O’Carroll with Fairfax County Police said not long after the murders they identified Nessibu as the suspect, but he had left the country.
In March of 2017 Nessibu was indicted on two charges of murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Fairfax County Police worked with the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI, Ethiopian authorities and others to track down Nessibu and bring him back to the U.S. Ethiopian authorities took him into custody in February of 2019, and he was flown back to the U.S. May 3.
“Mr. Nessibu attempted to run and hide from law enforcement, but our relationships here in Virginia and across the globe made that impossible for him,” said Matthew DeSarno with the FBI Washington Field Office.
Police said the victims knew Nessibu but did not give any other details about the killings. O’Carroll said more information would come out during Nessibu’s trial.
