Nadler and Barr steam toward clash over contempt (Politico)

The House Judiciary Committee will proceed with a vote to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress on Wednesday, Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) confirmed late Monday, as the Justice Department attempts to fend off the effort ahead of a negotiating session with the Democratic-led committee on Tuesday.

Nadler’s firm stance comes as he seeks punitive actions against the attorney general for defying a subpoena for special counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted report on the Russia investigation and its underlying evidence. It also comes hours after the Justice Department put forward a last-ditch plea to negotiate with the panel, offering a Wednesday meeting but later agreeing to Nadler’s demand for a Tuesday sit-down. Split with Barr? FBI Director Wray says surveillance not the same as ‘spying’ (FOX News)

FBI Director Christopher Wray, testifying to Congress Tuesday, said that he would not describe the bureau’s traditional surveillance as “spying” — indicating a possible split with Attorney General William Barr on his controversial use of the term to describe intelligence-gathering during the Russia probe.

“That’s not the term I would use,” Wray told lawmakers on the Senate Appropriations Committee when asked if FBI agents engage in “spying” when they follow FBI policies and procedures. “Lots of people have different colloquial phrases. I believe that the FBI is engaged in investigative activity, and part of investigative activity includes surveillance activity of different shapes and sizes, and to me the key question is making sure that it’s done by the book, consistent with our lawful authorities.” [Read More]

James Comey is in trouble and he knows it (The Hill)

James Comey’s planet is getting noticeably warmer. Attorney General William Barr’s emissions are the suspected cause.

Barr has made plain that he intends to examine carefully how and why Comey, as FBI director, decided that the bureau should investigate two presidential campaigns and if, in so doing, any rules or laws were broken.

In light of this, the fired former FBI director apparently has decided that photos of him on Twitter standing amid tall trees and in the middle of empty country roads, acting all metaphysical, is no longer a sufficient strategy. [Read More]

Trump breaks with key loyalist David Bossie over ‘deceptive’ fundraising (Washington Examiner)

President Trump broke with his longtime supporter David Bossie on Tuesday, with Trump’s 2020 campaign warning of “deceptive” fundraising in a stinging rebuke of a group run by Bossie.

Bossie served as Trump’s deputy campaign manager in 2016 and interviewed with Trump in December for the position of White House chief of staff, which Trump ultimately awarded to Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney.

On Sunday, the Campaign Legal Center and Axios reported that a Bossie-run group called the Presidential Coalition raised $18.5 million in 2017 and 2018, but spent just $425,000 on political activities. [Read More]

BREAKING: Multiple injuries in Colorado school shooting, situation is ‘unstable’ (KKTV)

At about 2 p.m. the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office put out an alert tied to a shooting at a school with multiple injuries.

“This is still an active shooter situation. We still don’t know whether there is still an active shooter inside,” said a spokeswoman with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office just before 3 p.m. “Two suspects are in custody.”

The shooting happened at the STEM school at Ridgeline and Plaza in Highlands Ranch at about 1:53 p.m. Highlands Ranch is a suburb of Denver. Authorities asked the public to avoid the area. A warrior class of their own (Washington Examiner)

The Army recruiter thought the well-dressed young man was lying. After all, the yarn this man spun, after walking into the recruiting office in Baltimore, sounded like pure nonsense. All kinds of honors at Swarthmore College. Top of his class at Columbia Medical School, and now into his fourth year of the elite, seven-year residency program at Johns Hopkins in neurosurgery. He claimed to speak both English and Korean fluently.

Yeah, sure.

This young man wanted to be a Green Beret? An enlisted man in the U.S. Army? Bringing home a base pay of $32,000 a year? The recruiter was polite; they always are. But he insisted the recruit come back with his diplomas to prove he was who he said he was. When proof was provided, the recruiter tried to convince the aspiring brain surgeon to join the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a physician. [Read More]

Mueller testimony before House committee tentatively set for May 15, Dem rep says (FOX News)

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., said on Sunday that a tentative date of May 15 has been set for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to appear before the House Judiciary Committee and face questioning over his report on Russian interference in 2016 election.

Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” the Rhode Island lawmaker said that while there is no guarantee that Mueller will show up to the hearing, he heard nothing from either Mueller’s representatives or the White House to indicate that the special counsel would not testify. [Read More]

Mayor Pete Buttigieg Ponders the Almighty’s Party Affiliation: ‘Can’t Imagine’ God Would Be a Trump Republican (Mediaite)

‘Mayor’ Pete Buttigieg has butted up against the religious right during his campaign, the media says, and on NBC’s Today on Tuesday, they talked with him about his own faith, and how that relates to Donald Trump.

“You also spend a fair amount of time talking about your faith,” said reporter Craig Melvin in a tone of voice that let the viewer know this was an earnest but curious moment. [Read More]
