UPDATE: Both teens appeared in court Monday afternoon, and they will be detained pending adjudication.

Clarification: The State’s Attorney’s Office has clarified that additional charges are pending against the teens. They just have not been filed yet.

UPDATE – 9/23/19 – The Frederick County State’s Attorney and detectives from the sheriff’s office met Monday morning and decided not to file additional charges against the two teens charged with the assault at the fair that left 59-year-old John Weed of Mount Airy dead. Will Cockey with the state’s attorney’s office said that doesn’t mean more charges won’t be filed, but that’s just not happening now. They are continuing to review evidence and interview witnesses about the assault.

The two teens will go before a judge in the juvenile court system Monday afternoon for an emergency hearing to decide whether bond should be set.

WASHINGTON (WMAL) 9/22/19 – Two teenage boys were charged with assault after an attack at the Great Frederick Fair Friday left a 59-year-old man dead. Witnesses told the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office the attack near the midway area of the fairgrounds was unprovoked and identified the 15 and 16-year-olds as the ones who did it. The sheriff’s office said the teens didn’t use any weapons.

The victim was unconscious when police arrived after the attack – which happened around 5:30 in the afternoon – and flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. He died Saturday.

The state’s attorney’s office is expected to file more charges against the teens according to the sheriff’s office. Now, the 15-year-old faces 1st and 2nd degree assault charges and reckless engagement. The 16-year-old was charged with 2nd degree assault.

The teens are in custody of the department of juvenile services until they can go before a judge.
