WASHINGTON – The Washington Redskins issued a press release on Friday that said the franchise will undergo a “thorough review” of the team’s name.
The announcement came a day after FedEx, the title sponsor of the Washington Redskins’ stadium said it wanted the team to change its name. Redskins owner Dan Snyder has faced increased pressure to change the name of the team in recent weeks.
“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field,” Snyder said in a press release Friday.
Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington D.C., also said the name was an “obstacle” to the team returning to the District. With the team’s lease at FedEx Field set to expire in 2027, the franchise remains in talks with Washington, Virginia and Maryland about building a new stadium in the near future.
“This issue is of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military,” coach Ron Rivera said in a release.
