WASHINGTON – An 80-year-old man shot his 76-year-old wife to death Friday morning in her hospital room before turning the gun on himself according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Medical workers at the Spotsylvania County Medical Center called 911 around 9:15 a.m. when they heard gunshots according to CPT. Elizabeth Scott. They didn’t know if there was an active shooter, so it was all hands on deck at first.

When first responders got there, Scott said they found Alexander and Pamela Turella dead in Pamela’s fourth floor room. An investigation found the two died in a murder-suicide.

“It’s incredibly tragic by itself,” said Scott. She added the tragedy is compounded by the fact that hospital workers are already going through extreme stress working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We at the sheriff’s office are just incredibly sad for the hospital personnel that are really being…that are going through a lot in itself, and then had to witness something like that,” said Scott.
