WASHINGTON – With COVID-19 cases on the rise, Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner said residents could soon see additional pandemic-related restrictions implemented in the county.

During a public information briefing on Thursday, Gardner said the county is beginning to see a new surge of COVID-19 cases. She said there were 43 new positive cases in the area on Thursday as Frederick County hit a new milestone with over 5,000 total cases since the start of the pandemic.

Gardner also said that COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the county are becoming a concern. With the local positivity rate also moving in the wrong direction, Gardner said the county will consider additional restrictions in the next couple of days.

“This could include limiting the gathering size of social gatherings and possibly closing some venues early like bars and restaurants,” Gardner said.

The county executive also encouraged residents to telework if they can and to wear masks whenever they are required. She said following this advice will help reduce the spread of the virus and keep the local economy running.

“It’s not a political statement, it’s just really what we need to do so that we can keep our businesses open and keep people healthy,” Gardner said.
