Fairfax County’s police chief called officers heroes Thursday after he said they saved the life of a man being attacked by a suspected gunman.

Around 11 Thursday morning, Fairfax County Police Chief Ed Roessler said a man called 911 to say someone he knew shot him in his apartment on Peach Orchard Drive. When police officers and sheriff’s deputies got to the apartment, Roessler said they started negotiating with the people inside, but the armed man was still attacking the man who was shot.

“To save the life of the victim, the brave law enforcement officers formed a reaction team and made immediate entry into the apartment,” Roessler said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Once they got into the apartment, Roessler said the suspect shot at them, and they shot him. He said the suspect was in critical condition and needed an operation. The victim is also in the hospital but expected to survive, according to Roessler. A bullet grazed one police officer’s arm. The officer was treated on the scene.

“I am blessed that our officers and deputies are ok. They are heroes,” Roessler said.

Detectives are still investigating. Roessler said he’d give another update when they know more.
