Fireworks went off accidentally in Ocean City Sunday morning as people who work for the company putting on the 4th of July display were setting them up. That has prompted the Ocean City Fire Department to cancel all of the city’s scheduled displays and close off parts of the boardwalk.

The fire department says they were called for a vehicle fire at Dorchester Street and the beach. There was no vehicle fire when they got there, but they found that some of the fireworks that were to be used in the display were unintentionally discharged.

Some of the employees of the company putting on the show had minor injuries according to the fire department. None of them went to the hospital, and nobody on the beach or boardwalk was injured.

“Prior to the fireworks being off loaded from the vehicle, Fire Marshals secure a safe zone around the fireworks and put other safety protocols in place.  It is this very zone and safety protocols that kept anyone else from being injured,” said Ocean City Fire Chief Richie Bowers.

The Ocean City Fire Marshal’s office is trying to figure out what happened. The fire department says it has blocked off an area around where it happened. It will stay closed until safety inspections are done, which the department says could take a few days.
