Maryland Governor Larry Hogan revealed his plan to combat “out-of-control violent crime” in Baltimore with $45 million in initiatives to aid the city’s crack down on violent criminals.
- Crime rates on the rise: 2021 marked the seventh straight year that Baltimore saw more than 300 homicides in the city.
- What Hogan is saying: “The murders, shootings and out-of-control violent crime in the streets of Baltimore is the most important issue facing the city and the No. 1 concern of Marylanders, but 71 days have now passed since the legislative session began without them taking action on our emergency crime bill.”
- $35 million will be allocated to fund victims’ service providers, which has seen a reduction in federal funding. $6.5 million would go to assisting law enforcement’s enhancement of their warrant apprehension task force. $3.5 million would be allocated to pay for 30 news positions in the U.S. attorney’s office to prosecute violent offenders.
- What’s next: Gov. Hogan has urged Maryland lawmakers to pass the legislation to fund the $45 million in initiatives to address Baltimore’s rising crime rates.
