Maryland Governor Larry Hogan was in Florida last week, where he criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his remarks threatening retaliation for Disney’s opposition to his Parental Rights in Education Bill.
- Setting the stage: early last week DeSantis signed into law the Parental Rights in Education Bill, which critics have labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, saying “We will make sure parents can send their kids to school to get an education, not an indoctrination.” A Disney spokesperson quickly responded after the bill was signed “Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that.”
- What Hogan said: “The whole thing seems like just a crazy fight … He wants to criticize Disney for expressing how they feel about that bill. I mean they have every right to — we have a thing called freedom of speech,” ,” Hogan said in an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “DeSantis is always talking about he was not demanding that businesses do things, but he was telling the cruise lines what they had to do, he was telling local schools.”
- The fight continues: DeSantis has suggested he would supporting stripping Disney of a special status that allow the company to operate as an independent government in the areas surrounding Orlando based theme park.
