Florida Legislator Sends Bill to End Disney’s Self-Governing Status to DeSantis Desk

By WMAL.com

The Florida House of Representative followed in the steps of the state senate, passing a bill that would formally revoke the special status enjoyed at Reedy Creek – the home of Disney’s and municipal district operated by Walt Disney Co. The legislation is now headed to the desk of Governor Ron DeSantis to be ratified.

The move follows a year long battle between the media giant and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over the Parental Rights in Education Law – also known as the “Don’t Groom our Kids” bill. The move could have massive tax implications for the Disney, who have enjoyed the luxury of the park’s special status for the past 55 years allowing them to carry out municipal functions on there own.

“Disney and other woke corporations won’t get away with peddling their unchecked pressure campaigns any longer,” DeSantis wrote in a fundraising pitch Wednesday. “If we want to keep the Democrat machine and their corporate lapdogs accountable, we have to stand together now.”

Disney is one of Florida’s biggest private employers, last year saying it had more than 60,000 workers in the state. It is not immediately clear how the company or local governments around its properties would be affected if the district was dissolved.
