Headlines from Pennsylvania, North Carolina Primaries

By WMAL.com

Tuesday marked the third slate of primary elections with voters heading to the polls in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Idaho, Kentucky and Oregon to decide their party’s nominee for this Fall’s general election. While elections were held across the country, all eyes were on the high profile Republican primary election to fill Pennsylvania’s vacant Senate seat.

In yet another test of former President Donald J. Trump’s endorsement power, tv personality and Trump-backed candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz took on hedge fund CEO David McCormick in a race that has yet to be determined as of Wednesday morning. “We’re not going to have a result tonight,” Dr. Oz told supporters in a crowded room in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The race is currently within a 0.5% margin which would automatically trigger a recount.

Key takeaways from Tuesday’s primaries:

  • North Carolina: the headline outside the state of Pennsylvania was in North Carolina where controversial Congressman Madison Cawthron was denied a second a term, losing his bid for the Republican nomination to state Senator Chuck Edwards. While Cawthorn did receive a late endorsement from Trump, his continuous gaffes along the campaign trail coupled with multiple controversies in his short term were too much for him to overcome on Tuesday night. However, Trump’s endorsement proved to be critical for Congressman Ted Budd who soared to victory in the state’s 13th Congressional district.
  • Pennsylvania: in the hotly contested contest for the Republican nomination for Governor, Trump-endorsed candidate and state Senator Doug Mastriano was victorious. Mastriano has been a staunch supporter of Trump’s since day one and is now slated to take on liberal challenger and state Attorney General Josh Shapiro.
