Powerball jackpot up to $1.55 billion, three Virginians win big over the weekend

Julia Eisen – WMAL News | October 9, 2023

121,000 Virginians had winning tickets in the Powerball on Saturday with three Virginians winning $50,000 a piece. However, no one was able to secure the jackpot prize.

For tonight’s Monday night drawing the Powerball jackpot is up to an estimated $1.55 billion.

John Hagerty, spokesperson with the Virginia Lottery, says that when the prize is bigger, more people want to get in on the fun.

“Oftentimes it’s people that don’t normally play who see the high jackpot, maybe they see it on a billboard or in the store,” Hagerty told WMAL News. “I’m sure their friends or coworkers are talking about the Powerball jackpot, and they decide, ‘Hey, now might be the time to get in the game.'”

While the jackpot prize might be tempting, Hagerty reminds people that the chances of winning big are slim to none.

“The odds… are one in 292 million,” Hagerty said.

However, the chances of receiving a smaller prize are much higher at 1 in 25. If you don’t get all six Powerball numbers correct there is still a chance you could receive some amount of money. Prizes range from $4 up to the jackpot.

Drawings are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59pm.
