Montgomery County Council has unanimously passed the Pedestrian Master Plan. The plan has been in the works for seven years.
The plan’s goals include making it easier to and safer for pedestrians around the county and to improve the overall transportation experience.
“It is so needed because so far this year 450 pedestrians and bicyclists have been hit and 12 people have been tragically killed,” Council President Evan Glass said during the legislative meeting.
The Pedestrian Master Plan is part of Montgomery County’s larger “Vision Zero” plan, which pledges to “eliminate serious-injury and fatal collisions on County roads for vehicle occupants (drivers and passengers), pedestrians, and bicyclists by the end of 2030.”
The plan’s guidelines require more sidewalks with better shade, safer crosswalks with better lighting and more amenities for pedestrians with disabilities.
