The Trump administration has taken the position that Ukraine’s victory over Russia is a priority as it simultaneously seeks peace in the long-running war, Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko told Newsmax on Thursday.
“I think that this administration wants to see Ukrainian victory,” Svyrydenko told White House correspondent James Rosen in an exclusive interview.
“And rhetoric during our meetings said that they want to support Ukraine; they want to re-arm Ukraine, they want to make us more stronger, and they want to weaken Russia with different measures, and they’re ready to impose additional sanctions.”
“And I think it’s good news for all Ukrainians.”
Svyrydenko spoke with Rosen as Trump was conducting a “lengthy” call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including amid talk of supplying Tomahawks to NATO and, therefore, Ukraine.
“Well, for me, it’s very hard to discuss Tomahawks or other long-range missiles,” Svyrydenko told Rosen. “I think it’s something what [the] president and minister of defense should discuss separately with President [Donald] Trump.”
Trump’s Friday meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will focus on Ukraine’s military and energy needs.
And it will focus on the path to peace in its war with Russia.
Speaking after meetings at the White House with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Svyrydenko told Rosen that Kyiv is seeking to secure long-range missiles and further U.S. support ahead of winter.
Asked about Trump’s recent comments that Ukraine “could reclaim” territory lost since 2014, she responded that Ukraine has already “ruined the plan of Russia’s soldiers” to take Kyiv and would be able to defend its territory if “properly re-armed.”
Svyrydenko underscored that Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure aim to “demoralize” civilians and weaken the economy.
She said the U.S. has pledged support for repairing energy grids, securing LNG supplies, and boosting energy investments.
Regarding Trump’s warning to Moscow before the recent Alaska summit with Putin, Svyrydenko said only Trump could speak to potential consequences but emphasized, “Russia does not want to have any negotiations.”
She concluded by stressing the importance of Trump’s continued support.
“The fact that he stands with Ukraine and can provide long-range weapons is extremely important not only for our partners, but for all Ukrainians,” Svyrydenko said.
