An unusually early nor’easter is strengthening along the East Coast, bringing days of rough weather from the Mid-Atlantic into New England.
CNN reported that the coastal storm was already producing dangerous surf and flooding concerns as it gathered strength offshore. Strong northeasterly winds have been pushing Atlantic water toward the coast, increasing the threat of flooding, beach erosion, and hazardous conditions through multiple high-tide cycles.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and powerful wind gusts to parts of the Northeast, including areas around New York City and southern New England. Coastal communities face the greatest risks, while strong winds could also bring down trees and contribute to power outages.
The timing makes the system unusual. Nor’easters are more commonly associated with the colder months, making a significant September storm noteworthy.
Warm Atlantic waters can also provide additional moisture to coastal storms. Scientists have documented rising ocean temperatures as the climate warms, creating conditions that can contribute to heavier rainfall when storms develop.
