FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid vouched for Darin Thompson

On Sept. 30, Darin Thompson, a former Fairfax County, Virginia, principal turned district administrator, surrendered at the Fairfax County Jail on a felony embezzlement charge.
Fairfax County police say Mr. Thompson used school credit cards to pay nearly $8,000 in personal expenses, including travel and events unrelated to his job. Mr. Thompson has not been convicted.
His name may sound familiar to high school football fans. Mr. Thompson was the principal of Hayfield Secondary School during the 2024 football scandal.
In April 2024, two months after Darryl Overton was named head football coach, 31 football players transferred to Hayfield from other schools, including 14 from Prince William County’s Freedom High School, where Mr. Overton had previously coached.
The influx immediately raised questions about whether players who lived outside the Hayfield boundary had been recruited to follow him.
At an August 2024 town hall, after the district’s internal review and an investigation by outside counsel found the allegations unsubstantiated, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid publicly backed Hayfield’s leadership.
She said, “I’m clear that, at this time, based on the reports I’ve seen, that Coach Overton has my full confidence, that our principal, Dr. Thompson, has my full confidence.”

The same night, school board member Mateo Dunne called for “a comprehensive and independent investigation of the allegations,” saying he was dissatisfied with the district’s internal review, which he called inadequate given the seriousness of the allegations.
Ms. Reid’s confidence did not last. After text messages surfaced in November 2024 suggesting that federal homeless provisions were being exploited at the school to make some students eligible for the football team, Hayfield withdrew its football team from the postseason.
In a letter to families, Ms. Reid said further review had found evidence of “potential impropriety.”
Even so, Mr. Thompson did not leave the district. He left Hayfield and was appointed senior administrator of nontraditional school programs, effective Sept. 15, 2025. That office oversees multiple specialized schools and programs, including adult education, interagency programs and homebound and home-based instruction.
The decision to move him deserves scrutiny. How did an administrator who had been principal at the center of one of the district’s most controversial athletic scandals land in a senior central office job responsible for multiple programs and accounts? What due diligence, oversight and financial controls were in place before and during that assignment?
I asked FCPS’s media relations office how Mr. Thompson’s appointment was approved and what financial controls applied to his role. As of publication, the office had not responded.
Ms. Reid is ultimately responsible for the leadership structure she oversees, and the record raises serious questions about her judgment. This criticism is not simply because an FCPS employee was later accused of misconduct, but because of the district’s response at every stage.
In August 2024, Ms. Reid gave Mr. Thompson her “full confidence” on the same night that a school board member publicly challenged the adequacy of the investigation she was relying on. The November 2024 texts and the Virginia High School League’s separate findings of rule violations by Hayfield staff later undercut that investigation’s conclusion.
Yet FCPS did not distance itself from the administrator at the center of the episode. Instead, it placed him in a senior post. The alleged financial misconduct surfaced only afterward.
This is not merely a story about one administrator allegedly misusing taxpayer money. It is a story about leadership, oversight and accountability.
If Ms. Reid’s administration places people in positions of responsibility without adequate scrutiny, taxpayers are entitled to ask whether the problem lies with one individual’s alleged misconduct or with the entire district’s approach to hiring and oversight.
At minimum, the Thompson case raises serious questions for Ms. Reid: What did you know, when did you know it, and why was an administrator whose leadership had already been associated with a major district controversy entrusted with greater responsibility at the central office level?
Until she or her office answers, the problem belongs to the superintendent, not just to one administrator.
