UPDATE: 7:00am – CSX has released a statement confirming that two of its employees were struck and killed by an Amtrak train as it headed into Union station late Tuesday night.
This was train 175 from New York – with 121 passengers on board. No one on the train was hurt.
Passengers were all eventually offloaded onto another train, which took them into Union Station.
The incident took place along New York Avenue, under the 9th Street bridge. Initial reports from the scene indicated the two victims may have been trespassers.
The train remains in place as the investigation continues. Officials with CSX and the National Transportation Safety Board are on the scene conducting interviews and collecting evidence.
The incident has put a serious dent in morning train travel. All Amtrak service between Washington and Philadelphia was suspended, and MARC Commuter train service was curtailed as well, with inbound Camden line service running only as far as Greenbelt, and limited Penn Line service running only as far as New Carrollton.
Metro is accepting MARC tickets at those stations for commuters continuing their trips into D.C.
