MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WMAL/AP) — A college student from Bowie, Maryland was shot and killed by police Sunday evening after she ran over an officer while apparently trying to make a getaway after causing a crash in Miami’s famed South Beach neighborhood.
22-year-old Cariann Denise Hithon was behind the wheel of a black BMW on a busy neighborhood street that was lined with sidewalk cafes, and was captured on video after driving driven through a red light and striking a Mercedes.
As police approached Hithon’s car, she abruptly drove off, striking an officer. Another officer responded by shooting at the car, which crashed seconds later into a parked truck.
Hithon was wounded by the gunfire. A male passenger who was also in the car was not hurt.
Hithon was taken to the hospital where she died. The officer is in stable condition.
Miami-Dade police detectives are investigating the incident.
Hithon’s father told reporters his daughter had been in Miami to celebrate her 22nd birthday. She was scheduled to graduate from Temple University in the spring.
