WASHINGTON — (WMAL) A Fairfax County judge is going to let defense lawyers for accused killer Charles Severance introduce evidence they say implicates former Alexandria Sheriff Jim Dunning in the murder of his wife, Nancy.
That is one of the killings Severance is accused of.
“It is quite a preposterous strategy in one sense…audacious in another sense,” said former U.S. attorney Joe DiGenova. “But in a situation like this, since the judge has ruled it as permissible, it’s going to go forward.”
Judge Randy Bellows said his ruling does not “suggest or imply” that Dunning committed the crime, but only that the Severance legal team can bring it up.
“It’s always good if you can point the finger at somebody else,” said DiGenova. “In this case he’s pointing the finger at a deceased, law enforcement official whose wife was killed and who the defendant is accused of killing.”
The former sheriff died in 2012.
