5am – A/B Trump wants RNC to help him raise $1 billion. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump hopes to raise more than $1 billion through the November election, according to an interview with NBC News Wednesday. The New York businessman told Nightly News host Lester Holt he hopes to partner with the Republican National Committee to raise support for a general election match-up against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. But Trump said he was not sure he would need heavy financial backing because of the amount of free press he has received through the primary season.
5am – C George Mason Faculty Ask University to Suspend Renaming of Law School After Scalia. George Mason University’s faculty governing body on Wednesday called on its administration to suspend the naming of the law school after Justice Antonin Scalia. By a vote of 25-12, the university’s faculty approved a resolution asking for an indefinite delay of the renaming. The resolution isn’t binding on administrators, who say they’re not backing down. But it represents a symbolic rebuke of George Mason’s leadership and underscores a widening rift on its campuses. It was passed a day after the university’s president released an impassioned statement defending the recognition of the late conservative justice and the $30 million in donations tied to the renaming.
5am – D Hillary Email News:
- Judge: It ‘May Be Necessary’ to Depose Hillary Clinton in Email Case. A federal judge said Wednesday that it “may be necessary” to depose Hillary Clinton about the nature of her personal e-mail server, in a freedom-of-information lawsuit over the employment of top aide Huma Abedin. Federal District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan made the observation in an order granting a plan for discovery by Judicial Watch, a Washington-based legal group seeking information about the arrangement that allowed Abedin to do outside work while she was working for Clinton at the State Department.
- Romanian hacker Guccifer: I breached Clinton server, ‘it was easy.’ (FOX News) – EXCLUSIVE: The infamous Romanian hacker known as “Guccifer,” speaking exclusively with Fox News, claimed he easily – and repeatedly – breached former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal email server in early 2013. “For me, it was easy … easy for me, for everybody,” Marcel Lehel Lazar, who goes by the moniker “Guccifer,” told Fox News from a Virginia jail where he is being held. Guccifer’s potential role in the Clinton email investigation was first reported by Fox News last month. The hacker subsequently claimed he was able to access the server – and provided extensive details about how he did it and what he found – over the course of a half-hour jailhouse interview and a series of recorded phone calls with Fox News.
5am – E Critter News:
- Adorable Baby Beaver Paddles Around Outside Van Ness Metro. (DCist) — Most of the time, seeing a rodent outside of a Metro station leads to screaming and running away. But this little beaver caused quite a different reaction outside of the Van Ness Metro today. Jonathan Murray, who lives up the road from the Van Ness Metro, captured the sighting. “There was a crowd around the beaver,” which was crawling around by the fountain in the Van Ness plaza, says Murray. “It was clearly attracted to the fountains and trying to get a drink of water.” By the time Murray arrived, authorities had already been contacted. He says that an officer went into the nearby Giant to get a cardboard box to collect the beaver.
- Mack, the beehive sniffing detective. WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — Some K-9s learn to sniff out drugs and explosives. But according to the Maryland Department of Agriculture, one, and only one, is trained to detect American Foulbrood. What’s American Foulbrood? A bacterial disease that’s attacking beehives across the country, and could threaten our food supply. The dog with the special sniffer is named Mack. He’s an adopted 2-year-old Labrador who works for the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Not bad for a dog that was kicked to the curb as too rambunctious by his original owners. Mack’s owner, and Chief Apiary Inspector for the Maryland Department of Agriculture, is Cybil Preston.
- Police: Man crashes car after 112-mph chase, flees with monkey on back. (Fox 11) — BURIEN, Wash. – A man was arrested early Wednesday after leading Burien officers on a high-speed chase, crashing his car and then fleeing on foot with a monkey on his back, police said. The bizarre drama unfolded when a Washington State Patrol trooper spotted a reckless driver heading along Highway 509 at high speed. The trooper clocked the driver on radar at 112 mph. Witnesses told police that the suspect jumped from his car and began to run away – then returned to his car to retrieve something, which turned out to be his pet monkey.
6am – A/B/C Wisconsin city passes ordinance to fine parents of bullies hundreds of dollars. SHAWANO, WI. – As part of a new ordinance in Shawano, Wisconsin, parents will face fines if their child is a bully. According to WLUK, Shawano’s city council passed the anti-bullying ordinance two weeks ago. Under the new ordinance, parents will be warned if police determine their child bullied another child. Parents have 90 days to address their child’s behavior. If their child continues to exhibit bullying behavior, the parents will be issued a $366 fine. If the child receives another bullying offense, parents wil be fined $681. The anti-bullying ordinance prohibits bullying or harassment of any kind, including cyber-bullying. The ordinance applies to anyone under the age of 18.
6am – D 2016 News: Kasich Drops Out. Hillsry Slams Trump AS A “loose cannon.” Rolling Stones tell Donald Trump to stop playing their songs at events.
6am – E DOJ News:
- US gov’t says North Carolina LGBT law violates civil rights. (AP) — Legislation has been proposed in states across the country to protect those who — due to religious beliefs — decline to employ or serve certain people. Critics say the laws are aimed at the LGBT community and are discriminatory. Recent laws denounced as discriminatory in North Carolina and Mississippi has prompted a growing backlash from opponents. The US Justice Department said Wednesday that North Carolina’s law limiting protections for LGBT people violates federal civil rights laws. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory says the Obama administration’s warning means the issue is no longer confined to North Carolina and could affect other states.
- Carson floats Cruz as attorney general to go after Clinton. Ben Carson has a plan for Ted Cruz now that the Texas senator has dropped out of the GOP presidential race: attorney general, then Supreme Court justice under a Trump administration. When Fox News Radio’s John Gibson asked Carson on Wednesday whether it would be “smart” for presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump to offer Cruz a position on the Supreme Court, he said yes. “I think he would be terrific on the Supreme Court, or I think he would be a terrific attorney general. Or he could be both,” Carson said. “He could be attorney general first, you know, go ahead and prosecute Hillary, and then go on the Supreme Court.”
- Dem AG Targets 90 Conservative Groups in Climate Change Racketeering Suit. Subpoena demands Exxon correspondence with Heritage, Cato, Mercatus, Hoover, and Reason, among others. (Free Beacon) – The attorney general of the U.S. Virgin Islands is targeting dozens of conservative and libertarian organizations in a racketeering lawsuit against climate change skeptics that has been widely described as an effort to silence political opponents. In a subpoena issued in March, the office of USVI attorney general Claude Walker demanded from Exxon Mobil copies of communications between the oil company and 90 different political and policy organizations “and any other organizations engaged in research or advocacy concerning Climate Change or policies.” The subpoena was part of a national, coordinated legal campaign by state attorneys general and left-wing advocacy groups to use the legal system against companies and organizations that disagree with and advocate against Democratic policies to address global climate change.
7am – A/B Paw-ternity leave? Pet owners deserve family leave, too. (Today) — That’s right, “paw-ternity” leave is a real thing over in the U.K., and it’s a howling success. Companies across the pond now are giving their employees time off to take care of their pets, with benefits that can reach from a few hours to a few months, according to Public Radio International. “We got a puppy from a rescue home and we realized it needed to be looked after properly, so I took a week off to ensure it was welcomed into the home and to set boundaries for the dogs,” owner Greg Buchanan, who runs a tech company, told PRI. “And it went from there, and my dog is now better for it.” In addition to being a fetching concept, this may be an idea whose time has come: Americans now spend over $60 billion each year on their pets, according to the American Pet Products Association, up from $17 billion in 1994. “It’s time for the U.S. to hop aboard the ‘paw-ternity’ train,” pet owner and features editor Lindsay Putnam wrote in the New York Post. “It’s not just because I want to stay home and cuddle on the couch with my new feline (which I do).”
7am – C Cinco De Mayo:
- No, Cinco de Mayo Is Not Mexican Independence Day, Here’s What It Is. Today marks the 154th anniversary of Cinco de Mayo, a bicultural celebration that has become synonymous with margaritas, cervezas (beer) and the occasional controversy. But we found most people don’t know the real story behind this holiday. It’s not Mexico’s Independence Day: Cinco de Mayo commemorates the triumph of the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This victory occurred over 50 years after Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16.
- Ex-Mexican President Vicente Fox apologies to Trump for using F-word on ‘wall proposal.’ Former Mexican President Vicente Fox has apologized to Donald Trump, who he scolded earlier this year for proposing the construction of a wall between Mexico and the US, while comparing the now-presumed GOP presidential nominee to Hitler. “I apologize. Forgiveness is one of the greatest qualities that human beings have, is the quality of a compassionate leader. You have to be humble. You have to be compassionate. You have to love thy neighbor,” Fox told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview in Santa Monica, California. To show his sincerity, the former Mexican leader invited Trump to come to Mexico and see the county for himself. “I don’t think he should follow the strategy of attacking others, offending others, to get to his purpose. There are other ways and means of doing it,” Fox stressed, adding, “I invite him to come to Mexico and to see what Mexico is all about.”
