The Office of Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares voiced opposition to Dominion Energy’s large offshore windfarm proposal in a filing with the Virginia State Corporation Commission on Friday. The filing from his office claimed the proposed solar project is more costly than solar energy, not needed and accuses the company of overstating the project’s economic benefits.
- Dominion Energy’s plan is to construct a wind farm off the coast of Virginia Beach that includes 180 wind turbines and is expected to cost $9.8 billion. If approved the proposed plan would pave the way for the construction of the largest energy project in the Commonwealth’s history. The wind farm would be the largest in the country and one of the largest in the entire world.
- State-of-play: the Virginia State Corporation Commission is currently considering the proposal. Dominion Energy needs the approval of the Commission to move forward with the project. The Commission will hold hearings on the proposal beginning May 16 and a public comment period will remain open until that time.
- The filing by the Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Counsel was made Friday at the Virginia State Corporation Commission.
