The United States is reviewing whether its military and intelligence footprint in the Middle East could become smaller after the current conflict with Iran ends. CNN reports that officials are examining several options, including reducing the number of personnel and facilities kept in the region on a long-term basis.
Part of that review involves bases and intelligence sites damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks. Some locations could be rebuilt with stronger protection, while others may be replaced by different arrangements. CNN says officials are also considering whether certain missions could be carried out by personnel and equipment deployed temporarily from outside the region rather than based there continuously.
The discussions have not resulted in a formal change in policy. Roughly 50,000 U.S. troops remain in the Middle East, and future decisions would depend on security conditions, military needs and cooperation with regional partners.
The review reflects a broader reassessment of how the United States maintains its presence in the region after more than two decades of expanded operations.
