“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling has penned a new essay in which she writes that her opinions on transgenderism remain steady in spite of threats against her.
“My views haven’t changed,” she wrote Wednesday on her website, “but the landscape certainly has, and my own involvement in the issue has become practical as well as theoretical, so I thought it was time for an update.”
Ms. Rowling claims she has faced an “avalanche of death, rape and torture threats” since she first spoke out six years ago in an essay that covered “the current, dominant strain of trans activism, which holds that a man who declares himself a woman is, literally, a woman, and is therefore entitled to be treated as a woman in all contexts.”
Since then, Ms. Rowling has rejected “anti-trans” labels, stating in her new essay that there are “vulnerable” trans people who need to be protected. In the Wednesday post, she reflected on past movements for gay and women’s rights, writing that “twenty-first century trans activism is the very inverse of those movements. It is elitist to its core.”
On Saturday, trans activists disrupted a gala performance of Ms. Rowling’s play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” when they stormed the red carpet in London.
