Rubio Urges Biden to Make $2,000 Stimulus Checks Top Priority

President-elect Joe Biden should back an increase in stimulus payments to $2,000 immediately after the inauguration, Sen. Marco Rubio wrote in a letter on Wednesday, Business Insider reported.

The Florida Republican wrote to Biden that “It would send a powerful message to the American people if, on the first day of your presidency, you called on the House and Senate to send you legislation to increase the direct economic impact payments to Americans struggling due to the pandemic from $600 to $2,000.”

The larger stimulus payments are by and large backed by Democrat congressmen and are expected to be included in Biden’s economic relief plan he is set to release on Thursday, and many Republicans argue that it will be too costly.

Rubio stressed in the letter that “you have the ability to help break the paralysis in Washington by delivering desperately needed relief. I implore you to rise above the rhetoric and deliver an increase in assistance for American families.”

The senator urged the president-elect to “not allow direct payments to the American people to get caught up in the normal political games” and to prevent the move from getting tied up with unrelated legislation.

Axios speculated that Rubio, who is a possible 2024 presidential candidate, is trying to showcase himself as a practical politician who can get bills passed through cooperation with his opponents.

“Although I will disagree with your administration frequently over the next four years,” Rubio wrote, “I am committed to working in good faith to advance critically important and effective policies on behalf of the people of this great nation.”
