WASHINGTON (WMAL) — The sixth Democrat gets into the race for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District seat currently held by Chris Van Hollen, who is now running for the U.S. Senate. Valerie Ervin was the first African American woman elected to serve on the Montgomery County Council.

Ervin made her announcement on a video posted on her website today. Participants in the video include mothers, students, teachers and even her own son.

“Our community is strong, and our dreams are big. Our future is bright, if we work hard. We will run for Congress together, and together we will build a stronger community,” Ervin said in the video.

Ervin joins an already crowded race for Van Hollen’s seat. Her competition inlcudes the following Democrats: State Sen. Jamie Raskin, Delegates Ana Sol Gutierrez and Kumar Barve, former WJLA anchor Kathleen Matthews and former Obama administration aide Will Jawando.
