Mornings on the Mall

Friday June 30, 2017

Hosts: Mary Walter and Vince Coglianese

5am – A/B/C Donald Trump: I Rejected ‘Psycho Joe’ from New Year’s Party; ‘Crazy Mika’ Was Bleeding from Face Lift (Breitbart) President Donald Trump turned his ire on MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and his fiancé Mika Brzezinski, branding them with new nicknames and dishing embarrassing details about their relationship. Trump called Scarborough “Psycho Joe” on Twitter Thursday morning and labeled his co-host Brzezinski “low I.Q. Crazy Mika.” He recalled that the television couple both wanted to join him during a New Year’s Eve party at his Mar-a-lago club, but he refused. “Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me,” he wrote. “She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!” Trump again insisted that he did not watch their show anymore but was told that the couple “speaks badly of me.” Prior to Trump’s tweets, the pair sneered mockingly at Trump because of his healthcare bill and started ridiculing the president because of a fake TIME magazine cover spotted in his golf club. Brzezinski mocked the photo of the cover, calling Trump’s hands “teensy” and said he was “lying every day and destroying the country” ‘Not mentally equipped to continue watching our show’: ‘Morning Joe’ co-hosts respond to Trump’s attack on Mika Brzezinski (Buisness Insider) In a Washington Post column published early Friday titled “Donald Trump is not well,”Brzezinski and Scarborough wrote “we are both certain” that Trump “is not mentally equipped to continue watching our show.”

5am – D Multiple states reject request from Trump’s voter fraud commission to provide voter roll data (Washington Examiner) Officials in at least five states say they will reject a request by President Trump’s voter fraud commission to turn over all publicly available voter roll data. By late Thursday evening California, Kentucky, Virginia, Massachusetts and Connecticut signaled resistance to the request citing concerns over privacy, politics and one of the commission’s top officials. In a letter sent Wednesday to all 50 secretaries of state, the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity’s vice chairman — Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach — requests the full names of all registered voters, their addresses, dates of birth, the last four digits of their Social Security numbers, voting history and other personal information. The letter says that any documents submitted to the commission will also be made available to the public.

5am- E Stanford Prof: Calling Homework Easy Is A ‘Microaggression’ (Daily Caller) Talking about how easy your homework assignment is could be a microaggression, according to Ruth Starkman, a professor at Stanford University. Writing for the Huffington Post, Starkman argued that referring to your homework as “easy” could hurt other students’ feelings, since not all students may have found the assignment easy to complete. “Had you been listening, you might have heard others describe your comment as a ‘microaggression,’ a term coined in 1970 by Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Chester M. Pierce,” Starkman wrote. Explaining why you found the homework easy could be a microaggression too, because “even if it’s not a lie,” it could also be “a form of bragging.” “Not everyone went to your high school, had your fortunate circumstances, or such a dazzling delivery room arrival, and even if they did, they might still be suffering because of the genuine challenges of the assignments,” Starkman wrote.

6am – A/B/C New Device Allows Cops To Download All Of Your Smartphone Activity In Seconds  “Any person who operates a motor vehicle in the state shall be deemed to have given consent to field testing of his or her mobile telephone and/or personal electronic device for the purpose of determining the use thereof while operating a motor vehicle, provided that such testing is conducted by or at the direction of a police officer.” That’s language from the text of a bill currently working its way through the New York state legislature. The legislation would allow cops to search through drivers’ cell phones following traffic incidents — even minor fender-benders — to determine if the person was using their phone while behind the wheel. Now, technology exists that would give police the power to plug drivers’ phones into tablet-like devices — being called “textalyzers” in the media — that tell officers exactly what they were doing on their phone and exactly when they were doing it. And if the readout shows a driver was texting while driving, for instance, the legal system will have an additional way to fine them.

6am – D INTERVIEW – KEVIN DALEY – Legal Affairs Reporter, Daily Caller News Foundation

Topic : Travel Ban

  • As the revised version of President Donald Trump’s travel ban went into effectThursday night, the public reaction was muted compared with the massive protests that erupted in January.
  • Hawaii Attorney General Douglas Chin filed the motion Thursday afternoon, asking the court to clarify that the federal government may not enforce the controversial bans against grandparents, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins of people currently living in the United States.

6am – E Sex Toy Company Urges Citizens to Send Vibrators to Congress to Benefit Planned Parenthood (Breitbart) A sex toy company is urging citizens to send their members of Congress a vibrator to support Planned Parenthood as the organization potentially faces the elimination of its taxpayer funding in the GOP Obamacare replacement bill. With its “Vibes for Congress” campaign, Unbound says 75 percent of all proceeds from the sale of its vibrators sent to members of Congress will benefit the nation’s largest provider of abortions. For $15, members of Congress will receive a vibrator and an “educational pamphlet,” explains Unbound. “Concerned citizens nationwide can now send their favorite congressman the vibrator he so obviously needs,” says Elle.com.

6am – F Woman said to be oldest person in world celebrated her 131st birthday with some of her 56 descendants A woman claimed to be the world’s oldest person celebrated her 131st birthday on Sunday with some of her 56 descendants in attendance. The bills — “Kate’s Law” and the “No Sanctuary for Criminals Act” — would up the penalties on undocumented immigrants who attempt to reenter the country illegally after being deported for crimes and slash funds from cities that protect them.
  • Under the legislation, an undocumented immigrant previously convicted of a crime who attempts to re-enter the country could face between 10 and 25 years in prison.

7am – B NYT Corrects Story Claiming 17 Intel Agencies ‘Agree’ On Russia (Daily Caller) The New York Times issued a correction Thursday on an article that incorrectly claimed all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies agreed that “Russia orchestrated the attacks, and did it to help get [Trump] elected.” The original article, published June 25, covered certain reactions that President Donald Trump gave in response to Russian cyber attacks and interactions with the 2016 presidential election. TheNYT’s correction notes that: “The assessment was made by four intelligence agencies — the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The assessment was not approved by all 17 organizations in the American intelligence community.” NYT Reporters Stage Walkout, Chant ‘No Editors, No Peace’ Over Staff Cuts (Daily Caller) Reporters and editors at The New York Times staged a walkout Thursday afternoon, chanting “no editors, no peace” in protest of the NYT’s plan to cut loose dozens of copy editors as the paper adapts to the digital age.                                        Top of FormBottom of Form

“We have begun the humiliating process of justifying our continued presence at The New York Times,” the NYT’s copy editors said in a letter Wednesday to executive editor Dean Baquet. “We worry that the errors and serious breaches of Times standards that copy editors catch each day will go unnoticed,” they added.

7am – C MSNBC Contributor: Hillary Lost Because Obama Is Black (Daily Caller) MSNBC contributor Wendy Sherman believes that Hillary Clinton may have lost the election because it was too hard for America to elect the first female president directly after the first black president. “And I hesitate to say, but I think it’s critical, looking out at our audience, looking out at most of us — that there is no doubt that we just had eight years of an African American president is not a factor in all that we are experiencing today,” Sherman commented. “When we make social change, when we make a decision to do something we have never done before, we then take two steps backward, at least. And I believe in my bones…that it was pretty hard to elect a woman after we elected the first African America president.”

7am – D New Laws Take Effect in Virginia and Maryland on July 1 New state laws going into effect Saturday could impact how Virginians drive, what kind of alcohol they buy, and what they wear when they go hunting. New laws taking effect in Maryland include steps to provide funding for Planned Parenthood to mitigate potential federal cuts and require schools to teach about the dangers of opioid addiction.  A state tax break for emergency services personnel also is going into effect, along with measures aimed at protecting bees and opening the nation’s only Guinness brewery.

8am – B Mattis says US ‘may have pulled our troops out too rapidly’ in Afghanistan Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Thursday at the NATO defense ministerial meeting in Brussels the U.S. may have cut the number of troops in Afghanistan “too rapidly” amid a resurgent Taliban. Mattis’ remarks came as NATO agreed to send more forces in response to commanders’ requests for as many as 3,000 troops to train and work alongside Afghan security forces. That number does not include an expected contribution of almost 4,000 American forces, divided between the NATO mission and America’s counterterrorism operations against Taliban, Al Qaeda and Islamic State militants in Afghanistan. “We may have pulled our troops out too rapidly, reduced the numbers a little too rapidly, but the difference today is that the Afghan army is actually able to carry the fight and they’ve been carrying the fight for some time now so there’s always new ideas you can come up with. There’s never a lack of those,” Mattis said. “There’s new opportunities and certainly the political will is there to carry this fight forward”

7am – C Security in DC for Fourth of July Additional security measures will be in place to ensure the safety and security of those in attendance.  Anyone attending events on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol must adhere to security screening procedures before entering the event site.  This will include an administrative search of all bags, coolers, backpacks, and closed containers. For this event, food items and lawn/beach chairs that sit low to the ground are permitted.  Guests are encouraged to bring their own supply of water.  Alcoholic beverages of any kind and glass bottles are strictly prohibited. Security on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. will be particularly tight this July 4 holiday, though law enforcement says visitors probably won’t notice the changes from years past. Among the preparations: protection against vehicle attacks, which have been used in some overseas incidents

8am – D INTERVIEW –  TUCKER CARLSON – Host of “Tucker Carlson Tonight”, weeknights at 9 PM ET on Fox News.

Topic: Trump’s Tweets

  • Tucker Carlson says the “real tragedy” ofPresident Trump’s tweets about MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski is that they’re distracting from his agenda.
  • In his opening monologue last night, Tucker said the left is angry at Trump not because he’s offensive or vulgar, but because he’s a threat to them and their beliefs.”They hate Trump because he’s a nationalist who says the interests of America and its people ought to come first,” Tucker said. “That’s fine. Let them hate him for that. The rest of the country loves it.”
  • He said the tweets, however, are an unhelpful and unnecessary diversion from Trump’s agenda of helping the American middle class.
