LISTEN: GORDON CHANG: Trump’s Tweet to China about North Korea is a Great Use of Social Media

Listen as Larry spoke with author and columnist Gordon Chang regarding North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile launch.

During the interview, O’Connor asked Chang about the President’s use of Twitter when dealing with America’s national security:

O’Connor: And so much, Gordon Chang, has been said of course, about President Trump and his use of Twitter. But I have to say, his tweet that sits at the top of his page right now is resonating and I think maybe shows or highlights the potential power of the President’s tweets. He said, “Trade between China and North Korea grew almost 40% in the first quarter. So much for China working with us – but we had to give it a try!”. What kind of message is that? Is this not an effective way to sort of send a message in a non-State Department rigged diplomatic way?

Chang: Well that tweet I actually quite like because what it does it actually puts the Chinese on notice that at that G20 meeting where Trump will meet Xi Jinping that it’s going to be a very difficult conversation for the Chinese. Now a couple of the Presidents other tweets have not been so effective. But nonetheless, what President Trump is doing is that he is putting the world on notice. And the tweet that you just mentioned about North Korea and trade with China, I think that was a very effective use of social media.
