Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser adopts a newborn baby (CBS News)

The mayor of the nation’s capital is a mom after adopting a newborn. Democrat Muriel Bowser announced the adoption in a statement Monday. Her office did not disclose the baby’s sex, name, age or photograph.

Bowser has never married or had any children.

The 45-year-old told CBS affiliate WUSA-TV she decided to start the adoption because it was a “great time” in her life and she had “so much to share with a baby.” She said notification that the baby was available came “much sooner” than she expected.

“People tell me all the time when they see me with kids, ‘you could have a baby. You should have a baby,’ and I said, ‘okay, maybe I should,'” Bowser says. [Read More]

County Council Approves Funds for Immigrant Legal Services (Bethesda Beat)

The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday unanimously approved dedicating $370,000 in county funds to pay for legal representation for low-income immigrants in the county who face civil deportation proceedings.

The vote came after the council’s initial plan to direct the money to the nonprofit Capital Area Immigrant Rights’ Coalition fell through Monday when the coalition withdrew its request for about $374,000 in county funds to represent detained immigrants. The nonprofit cited the lengthy list of exclusionary criminal convictions added by the county to the appropriation as the reason why it no longer wanted the money. Advocates said the list would prevent the coalition from adequately representing detained immigrants who may have a criminal record in civil immigration proceedings. [Read More]

U.S. Moves to Shutter All Iranian Nuclear Enrichment Sites in Major Reversal of Obama Policy (Washington Free Beacon)

The Trump administration, in a major reversal of Obama administration policy, is seeking to shutter every Iranian nuclear enrichment site, including its heavy water reactors, which could provide Iran with a second, plutonium-based pathway to a nuclear weapon, according to U.S. officials and others familiar with the policy shift.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in his first major policy address, called on Iran to shutdown its heavy water nuclear power plants, which were allowed by the Obama administration under the landmark nuclear agreement and laid the groundwork for Tehran and Russia to ink multi-billion dollar deals to build new nuclear reactors throughout the country, construction that is already underway.
