LISTEN: Fox News reporter Peter Doocy recaps Tuesday’s primary elections

PETER DOOCY – Reporter for Fox News Channel – discussed Tuesday night’s primaries

  • California rewards front-runners in top races, but contested House districts are likely to be unresolved for days. (Washington Post) — The year’s biggest day of primary elections — with voters in eight states casting ballots in hundreds of congressional, state and local contests — closed Tuesday with two well-known Democrats prevailing in marquee California races while the outcomes of other key contests in the state could stay unresolved for days. Dianne Feinstein, at 84 making another bid for the Senate seat she has held since 1992, was projected the winner as several candidates vied for the second slot. Gavin Newsom, the state’s lieutenant governor, was projected the winner of the race to succeed the term-limited Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and will face Republican John Cox in November’s election.
In California, Democratic Party officials are targeting at least a half-dozen House seats now held by Republicans, which could put them well on the way to flipping the 23 House seats they need to claim the majority.
  • Sen. Feinstein advances to California general election (Axios) — Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein has clinched enough votes to advance to California’s general election, the Washington Post reports, adding that she is a favorite to win her sixth term as a senator. Why it matters: This was not a guaranteed win for the veteran senator. Earlier this year, Feinstein was not endorsed by the California Democratic Party receiving only 37% of their support. As Axios’ Alexi McCammond reported earlier this year, Grassroots progressives wanted to push the party farther to the left in a struggle to agree on the party’s identity.
