Ocasio-Cortez on How to Pay for Her Ideas: Raise Taxes, Cut Military Spending (Washington Free Beacon)

Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday the U.S. government should fund her federal government program and policy ideas by raising taxes and cutting military spending.

Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” asked the democratic socialist how she would pay for her ambitious agenda that includes universal health care, tuition free higher education, and 100 percent use of renewable energy, among other programs.

“One of the key things that I want to speak to you about, then, is those ideas, I think most people would agree on, especially if they don’t know the label that they are attached to, you know,” Noah said in reference to Ocasio-Cortez being labeled as a socialist. “But then, the pragmatic side of it comes in, as you said, ‘how do you pay for these?'” [Read More]

Census Bureau: Couples Lie About Their Income When the Woman Makes More Than the Man (PJ Media)

The U.S. Census Bureau has released new research that claims to demonstrate “the importance of understanding societal norms.” When a wife earns more than her husband, researchers found, she will report that she earns less than she actually does. Additionally, the man in this situation will report that he earns morethan he actually does. Marta Murray-Close, who co-authored the study, called this a “critical finding,” saying that this research “adds to the understanding of gender norms and the quality of income statistics.”

But why might a man whose wife earns more then he does lie about his income? Is it the big bad patriarchy rearing its ugly head yet again? Jessica Valenti, of The Guardian, says yes! “Even in one of feminism’s most powerful moments, women still internalize messages about what is acceptable female behavior,” Valenti writes. “Even for progressive men,” she continues, “there’s a difference between believing in or fighting for equality in the public sphere, and living by those values in your own home.” [Read More]

Summer lesson for teachers: stop labeling kids (The Baltimore Sun)

Teachers are underpaid and overworked, and on top of these challenges, they’re expected to temper their feelings and opinions in order to teach children without inserting their own bias. Tough job! As a mother of a rising Kindergartner, I know that my son can be a handful, and managing him along with 19 or more other kids who are just as rambunctious isn’t for the faint of heart. Seriously, God bless teachers.

My son was deemed “Most likely to be class clown” at his pre-K graduation. Other classmates were christened “Most likely to be” CEO, an athlete, a fashion designer and so forth — all more or less aspirational labels. And then there was my son, called to the front of the stage as the “class clown” in front of me (Mom), Dad, and both of his grandmothers. You could hear the groans from other parents in the audience. It was embarrassing. Tacky. And in the end, we realized just how insulting it was to us and to our son. [Read More]

Meghan McCain: If Not For Trump, I Would Not Have Gotten Married (Mediaite)

Friday on The View, while discussing the recent wave of celebrity engagements – including Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra‘s agreeing to tie the knot after only 60 days of dating – Meghan McCain explained that she “would not have gotten with my husband if Trump didn’t become the nominee.”

“I have this theory ’cause I got together with my husband very quickly, which I never do,” she said. “We moved in very quickly. I have this theory that Trump’s America makes everything more intense and heightened, because we’re always talking about the threat of nuclear war and we want to be nurtured by each other.” [Read More]

Email campaign urges teachers across Maryland to consider leaving unions in wake of Supreme Court decision (The Baltimore Sun)

A Michigan-based “free market” think tank is emailing teachers across Maryland urging them to drop their union memberships in the wake of the Supreme Court decision that said public employees cannot be forced to pay union fees.

Teachers and union officials say they have been alarmed by the email campaign and question how its organizers gained access to school system email addresses.

The email from the “My Pay, My Say” campaign says government workers “now have a real choice when it comes to their unions. … Whether it’s disagreements about politics, concerns about a lack of local representation, problems with union spending or something else — you now have the right to stop paying for activities you don’t support.” [Read More]

Arlington shelter dog dying of cancer living out bucket list (Fox 5 DC)

An animal shelter in Arlington is helping a dog dying of cancer to fulfill his bucket list, including finding a family for him to spend his remaining days with.

Smoke, a 10-year-old hound, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and the Animal Welfare League of Arlington said it’s uncertain exactly how much time he has to live.

“We don’t know how long Smoke has left with us – it could be six months, or it could be just a few weeks. What we do know is that Smoke deserves to live the rest of the time he has left in a home with a family that loves him,” the AWLA said on Facebook. “We are hoping that someone will come and adopt this big, goofy boy and give him as much love as they can during his last weeks and months.” [Read More]

Second-quarter GDP jumps 4.1% for best pace in nearly four years (CNBC)

Gross domestic product grew at a solid 4.1 percent pace in the second quarter, its best pace since 2014, boosting hopes that the economy is ready to break out of its decade-long slumber.

The number matched expectations from economists surveyed by Reuters and was boosted by a surge in consumer spending and business investment. Stock market futures edged lower on the news while government bond yields moved lower.

That’s the fastest rate of the growth since the 4.9 percent in the third quarter of 2014 and the third-best growth rate since the Great Recession. In addition to the strong second quarter, the Commerce Department revised its first-quarter reading up from 2 percent to 2.2 percent. [Read More]
