A start date for the 95 Express Lanes is expected be announced this week, but the road's operators are worried drivers won't know how to use them.

All drivers will need an E-ZPass to use the 95 Express Lanes when they open in December. But only one-third of current HOV users have an E-ZPass, according to Transurban and Virginia Department of Transportation.

"A lot of people, they sort of have an auto-pilot mentality about their commute, but this is a huge change and if you're not prepared for it, it might catch you off guard on that opening day," Transurban's Mike McGurk told WMAL.

Carpoolers will need an E-ZPass Flex to ride for free. Other drivers will also need an E-ZPass, but will pay a toll.

Hybrid drivers will no longer ride for free.

"Everyone has to have an E-ZPass," McGurk said. "Carpoolers need that E-ZPass Flex to get that toll free trip. That's one area where we're still seeing a lot of confusion and a lot of people that aren't ready."

Drivers can get an E-ZPass at AAA Mid-Atlantic locations, Wegmans stores and Giant Food stores. Go to 95expresslanes.com for more information.

The lanes will run where the current reversible HOV lanes are and include a new 9-mile stretch between Stafford and Fairfax counties.

"We're coming in December," McGurk said. "It is coming soon and don't wait; don't be caught off guard by the opening of the 95 Express Lanes."
