Mornings on the Mall

Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Hosts: Larry O’Connor and guest host Dan Bongino

5am – A/B/C             Donald Trump Is Running For President. (Daily Caller / Alex Pappas) — Donald Trump’s critics have long accused him of perpetually flirting with running for the White House because he is an egomaniac who has never had any real intention of ever becoming a real candidate. But on Tuesday, the New York real estate mogul and reality show host did what those people said he would never do: he announced that he is actually running for president. “I am officially running for president of the United States, and we are going to make our country great again,” Trump said during his announcement at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York. Trump, who hosts NBC’s “The Apprentice” and owns the Miss USA pageant, spoke at a podium with American flags behind him Tuesday. After declaring his candidacy, Neil Young’s song “Rockin’ In The Free World” briefly played at the event before Trump continued speaking, vowing to be “the greatest jobs president that God ever created.” Trump said he will seek the Republican nomination for president. As he announced his candidacy, Trump aides released the details of his finances, a summary that shows him with a $8.7 billion net worth.

5am – D/E     Pope Francis warns of destruction of world’s ecosystem in leaked encyclical (Guardian) – Pope Francis will this week call for changes in lifestyles and energy consumption to avert the “unprecedented destruction of the ecosystem” before the end of this century, according to a leaked draft of a papal encyclical. In a document released by an Italian magazine on Monday, the pontiff will warn that failure to act would have “grave consequences for all of us”. Francis also called for a new global political authority tasked with “tackling … the reduction of pollution and the development of poor countries and regions.” His appeal echoed that of his predecessor, pope Benedict XVI, who in a 2009 encyclical proposed a kind of super-UN to deal with the world’s economic problems and injustices. According to the lengthy draft, which was obtained and published by L’Espresso magazine, the Argentinean pope will align himself with the environmental movement and its objectives. While accepting that there may be some natural causes of global warming, the pope will also state that climate change is mostly a man-made problem.

6am – A/B/C Bill introduced to repeal Frederick County’s English-only ordinance. (WTOP) – Two members of the Frederick County Council are working to repeal an ordinance passed in 2012 that required that all of the county’s official business be conducted in English. The two members, Jessica Fitzwater and M.C. Keegan-Ayer, say the 3-year-old ordinance is ineffective and sends a message of intolerance to country residents from diverse backgrounds and to businesses that may want to operate here. Dropping the ordinance, the two women said, would create a more welcoming environment for potential employers and newcomers to the county. They introduced a bill Tuesday to repeal the ordinance. Fitzwater said that several local and federal laws require that vital documents be available in a number of languages, so, for all practical purposes, nothing changed after the 2012 ordinance was passed. “This ordinance accomplished nothing of material substance,” she said. “It has, however, had a profound impact on how Frederick County is perceived by those around us, including local and national media as well as the broader business community.”

6am – D/E     Harris-Perry gets brutally chastised for stupid Dolezal interview. When a woman pretending to be a journalist interviewed a white woman pretending to be black Tuesday night, the only thing real was the outrage viwers vented onto social media afterward. MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry sat down with Rachel Dolezal, the faux black woman who was president of the Spokane, Wash., NAACP, apparently to get an idea of why Dolezal lied to her colleagues and her country about being a Caucasian. Instead, the majority of the women’s conversation focused on Dolezal’s “hair journey,” that’s literally what Harris-Perry called it.

7am – B        Critter News:

  • Federal government ready to declare eastern cougar extinct. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday proposed removing the eastern cougar from the endangered species list, declaring that the cougars have likely been extinct for at least 70 years. Recent sightings of cougars in the Northeast are believed to be migrating western mountain lions, Florida panthers or captive animals that were released into the wild, wildlife biologists said. “We recognize that people have seen cougars in the wild in the eastern U.S.,” said Martin Miller, northeast chief of endangered species. “Those cougars are not of the eastern cougar subspecies.”
  • Rockville says ‘yes’ to keeping chickens. WASHINGTON — Chickens will be able to roost in Rockville starting July 1. The Rockville City Council voted 3-2 to allow homeowners to keep up to five hens — no roosters allowed — within city limits. The vote came after reconsideration of a number of animal control regulations. As a result of the move, Rockville residents could keep chickens once they obtain a permit. Under the city’s provisions, any chicken coops would have to be 40 feet from the homeowner’s house and at least 5 feet from the property line. Opponents to the change cited concerns about noise and possible odor from chicken litter. Cheryl Corson, a landscape architect with Cheryl Corson Designs is a chicken enthusiast and has written about urban chicken keeping. Corson says the noise issue should not be a problem, since Rockville bans roosters from homeowner’s properties. Corson says the rooster’s crowing behavior is what most people think about when they think about chickens. Hens, she says, aren’t nearly as vocal. “In fact they make these sweet little cooing sounds,” Corson says.

7am – C Ben & Jerry’s to release vegan ice cream next year. Good news for anyone who is lactose intolerant, vegan or otherwise eschewing milk. Ben & Jerry’s has confirmed that they are creating a dairy-free ice cream and it will be released in stores next spring. Co-founder Jerry Greenfield told the Telegraph that his flavor developers have been working on the sweet new creation using either a coconut or almond milk base. “In the U.S. there are (dairy-free) alternatives from smaller companies but Ben & Jerry’s will be first mainstream company that will do that and will also do it in a really delicious way,” Greenfield said. No longer will the non-dairy types have to feel left out when they have a taste for something cold and creamy. Greenfield thinks the new product will “mean a lot all those who can’t eat dairy.”

7am – E         Public asked to weigh-in on potential predatory towing crackdown in Montgomery County. WASHINGTON — Complaints about aggressive and even predatory towing have increased in recent years in Montgomery County, and a bill meant to fight these practices got a public hearing Tuesday night. “My vehicle was towed within I think 6 or 7 minutes,” Brian Young testified before County Council’s Public Safety Committee. Christopher Whitehouse said what he went through amounted to “auto theft by tow truck.” Another person who had his car hooked up and towed away, Jimmy Duncan, had nasty things to say about one company. “They have thugs driving some of these tow trucks,” he said. “If you follow the signs, you won’t get towed,” said Rick Chambers, who owns three towing companies. “This law is protecting the violators.”
