5am – A/B/C DRIVE AT FIVE INTERVIEW – GUSTAVO ANDRADE (ANN-DRAH-DAY) – CASA de Maryland’s Director of Organizing

5am – D         Intelligence community wants Clinton’s security clearance suspended. (The Washington Times) Security experts say that if Hillary Rodham Clinton retained her government security clearance when she left the State Department, as is normal practice, it should be suspended now that it is known her unprotected private email server contained top secret material. “Standard procedure is that when there is evidence of a security breach, the clearance of the individual is suspended in many, but not all, cases,” said retired Army Lt. Gen. William Boykin, who was deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence in the George W. Bush administration. “This rises to the level of requiring a suspension.”

5am – E         Woman arrested after pouring hot grits on sleeping man, then bashing him on head with baseball bat. (NY Daily News) – A Maryland woman has been charged with assault after she poured hot grits on a sleeping man and then beat him with a baseball bat. Alexis Staton, 42, poured the food on the man while he was napping inside her home in Capitol Heights, MD, on July 31. When the victim jumped out of bed in shock, Staton then bashed him in the head with the baseball bat. According to an arrest warrant, the unnamed victim walked out of the house with burns to his body and with his head bleeding.

6am – A/B/C HBO to carry ‘Sesame Street’; PBS to continue airing show. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Muppets, longtime residents of PBS, are getting a second home at HBO. The premium cable channel and Sesame Workshop, which produces “Sesame Street,” on Thursday announced a five-year deal that will expand the “Sesame Street” footprint and its amount of programming. The next five seasons of the respected children’s series will be available on HBO and its related platforms, including HBO GO and HBO On Demand. The deal will allow the Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit educational organization, to produce almost double the content of previous seasons, HBO and the workshop said.

6am – D         Joe Biden Wades Further Into ’16 Bid. WASHINGTON — Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is vacationing on Kiawah Island off South Carolina’s coast, riding bikes and walking the beaches with his family. But on Wednesday night, he called one of his most outspoken political supporters and wrestled with the question looming over his future: Should he run for president?

6am – E         Redskins 20, Browns 17: Preseason win marred by injuries. CLEVELAND—The Redskins and Browns got together for a fairly entertaining preseason game here tonight that was won by Washington 20 to 17. But the game was marred by two injuries to Redskins, both of whom were carted off the field. Game Recap: The Redskins blew a golden opportunity to get on the board first. Robert Griffin III, who was solid in two series of play, launched a bomb to a wide-open Pierre Garçon. It appeared that the Redskins would have a 7-0 lead but Garçon dropped the pass and the Redskins punted. Josh McCown led the Browns to a touchdown on their first possession, capping a 75-yard drive with a scrambling two-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin.

Tom Brady returns to Patriots, plays in preseason game. Tom Brady appeared in New England’s first preseason game the day after appearing in court for a settlement hearing with the NFL. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick normally does not allow players to play in games after missing practice, but made an exception for the embattled quarterback, who faces a four-game suspension from the league for his alleged role in the Deflategate scandal in last season’s AFC championship game against the Colts. Brady started and played the first two series, completing one of four passes for 10 yards. Jimmy Garoppolo, who is slated to begin the season as the starter in his stead, replaced him in the game. Brady and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell did not reach a settlement during the Deflategate hearing before Manhattan Federal Court Judge Richard Berman on Wednesday.

7am – A         INTERVIEW — JESSIE JANE DUFF – Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps (ret); Senior Fellow, London Center for Policy Research

  • 35,000 Combat Veterans Denied Health Care Because of VA Computer Error

7am – B         Entertainment News:

  • There Is a Ned Flanders-Themed Metal Band. Phoenix-based Okilly Dokilly is the world’s first “Nedal” band, and it’s inspired entirely by The Simpson’s Ned Flanders. The five members of the band—Head Ned, Bled Ned, Red Ned, Thread Ned, and Stead Ned—dress just like Homer Simpson’s extremely religious neighbor, sporting gray slacks, green sweaters and pink collared shirts. They even wear glasses and most sport mustaches. According to an interview with Rip It Up, the idea for Okilly Dokilly materialized while Head Ned and drummer Bled Ned were coming up with “cutesy names for really hardcore, brutal bands.” “The name Okilly Dokilly came up and was very funny to us,” Head Ned said “We ran with it.”
  • Foo Fighters Call a Fan Onstage to Sing Rush’s ‘Tom Sawyer.’ As one would expect Foo Fighters to do when their tour reached Canada, they paid tribute to the Great White North’s favorite band by covering a Rush song in Edmonton, Alberta last night (Aug. 12). But rather than have Dave Grohl or drummer Taylor Hawkins sing “Tom Sawyer,” they called up a fan named Brian to handle Geddy Lee‘s vocals. “Welcome to my nightmare,” Grohl says, after warning him to not “f— it up.” He then handed Brian the microphone, and Brian didn’t disappoint. As you can see in the video above, he handled the high notes about as well as anybody could, and Grohl’s expressions on the video screen show that he was impressed. “Dude! That was f—ing amazing,” Grohl said after the song. “Holy s—! I don’t even know — what the f—? What was that? Dude, are you a eunuch? How did you f—ing hit those notes?”
  • NBC Better Have Her Money! Rihanna Is the New ‘Voice’ Advisor. The Voice Season 9, with coaches Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani, and Pharrell Williams, returns to NBC on Sept. 21. Following last month’s news that Missy Elliott, John Fogerty, Brad Paisley, and Selena Gomez will individually mentor teams during the Battle Rounds of this forthcoming ninth season of The Voice, it has now been revealed that Rihanna will be a multi-team advisor during the Knockout Rounds.

7am – C         Streetcar road striping project will close lanes of H Street. WASHINGTON — Starting Friday, the D.C. streetcar project will jam up the H Street corridor in the District for about a week. The parking lanes of both sides of H Street in Northeast, as well as the adjacent travel lanes, between 3rd and 14th Streets, will be closed on a rolling basis for the paintings of red stripes that will warn drivers about opening car doors onto the streetcar tracks. The striping “is an important safety upgrade that will address the safety and operational matter of vehicles parking outside of the white line parking boundary,” DC Streetcar says.

7am – D/E     Yellowstone park officials euthanize bear that killed hiker. HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Yellowstone National Park officials euthanized a grizzly bear Thursday after DNA tests confirmed it attacked and killed a hiker last week, a park spokeswoman said. The adult female bear was killed because it had eaten part of the Montana man’s body and hid the rest, which is not normal behavior for a female bear defending its young, spokeswoman Amy Bartlett said. “If a bear consumes an individual, it’s not allowed to remain in the population,” she said. “It’s not a risk we’re willing to take.” The bear’s two cubs also fed on the body, park officials determined, but arrangements were being made to transfer them to a zoo, Bartlett said. If no zoo had been willing to take them, the cubs likely would have been killed, too. “Cubs can adapt to a facility much easier, and there is no danger of them learning humans are food,” she said.

8am – A         INTERVIEW – DC COUNCILMEMBER JACK EVANS – Ward 2 Councilmember and on the board of WMATA

  • Jack Evans (born October 31, 1953) is an American Democratic politician, lawyer, and insurance executive from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania who has represented Ward 2 of Washington, D.C. on the Council of the District of Columbia since 1991. Evans is the D.C. Council’s longest serving lawmaker.
  • Metro board calls failure to fix bad track ‘unacceptable.’ WASHINGTON (AP) — Metro’s board of directors says the failure to repair a track problem that led to a derailment represents “a breakdown of the organization’s chain of command” and “an unforgivable breach of safety.” Metro’s general manager announced on Wednesday that the track problem was discovered in July and should have been fixed right away, but wasn’t. A train with no passengers on board derailed in downtown Washington last week, snarling the morning commute. The board’s safety committee chairman, Michael Goldman, said in a statement Thursday that general manager Jack Requa has 10 days to complete an investigation into why the problem wasn’t fixed.

8am – B         Entertainment News:

  • Taylor Swift is real-estate stalking another boyfriend. “People say… I apparently buy houses near every boy I like” -Taylor Swift, who is house-hunting near Calvin Harris (NY Post) — Sometimes you really can have too much money. Case in point: Serial home-buyer Taylor Swift once again is looking to snatch up pricey property, allegedly to be near (stalk?) another man in her long list of rumored beaus. The latest reports say the 25-year-old songstress is eyeing a listed castle ― yes, a castle — in Scotland, close to the Edinburgh base of boyfriend and celebrity DJ Calvin Harris. Specifically, it’s the $7.16 million Tower of Lethendy, which dates back to 1570 and is located about a 90-minute drive north of the city. Set on 40 acres, the castle has eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The grounds also include two gate lodges, two staff cottages, an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and a heated pool. Maybe Swift’s taking the lyrics of Harris’s hit “Feel So Close” too literally. The two have been dating since February.
  • NBC Officially Fires Donald Trump From ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’ BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — NBC entertainment chairman, Bob Greenblatt, had two words Thursday on whether Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump would ever return as host of “The Celebrity Apprentice:” Absolutely not. Greenblatt said that the show will not be back next season, but will return in the future with a new host. NBC cut ties with Trump in June days after he made critical comments about Mexican immigrants and NBC canceled its airing of the Miss USA pageant, which Univision also decided not to air.
  • 6 more years of nights hosting ‘Tonight Show’ for Fallon. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Just a few months after Jimmy Fallon marked his first anniversary as host of “The Tonight Show,” NBC has signed him for six more years. Calling him “the best there is,” NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said Fallon, who turns 41 next month, will occupy the “Tonight” host chair until at least 2021.

8am – C         Critter News:

  • Fairfax Co. police plead with residents to stop feeding coyotes. WASHINGTON — Fairfax County police are pleading with residents to stop feeding wild animals, such as raccoons, foxes, squirrels and coyotes. It is a growing problem in neighborhoods around the area, and it can lead to negative consequences for both homeowners and wildlife. “People feed wildlife just because they want to enjoy them on their property and be able to have close encounters that you normally wouldn’t be able to see,” said Katie Edwards, wildlife management specialist with the Fairfax County Police Department. Residents are typically well-meaning when they feed wild animals using pet food, peanuts, bread and table scraps.
  • Woman Loses Arms, Legs After Tick Bite — ‘It Was Crawling Up Her Limbs.’ A woman in Oklahoma had her arms and legs amputated after being bitten by a tick during a family trip. According to KOCO, four days after visiting Grand Lake, Jo Rogers thought she had the flu. The mother of two was tested for both West Nile Virus and meningitis, but the test results came back negative. Doctors said her organs were starting to shut down. Rogers’ cousin, Lisa Morgan, told KOCO, “…her arms and feet were turning dark blue and black. It was crawling up her limbs.” A photo of Jo Rogers was posted on a GoFundMe page established by her family.

8am – E         Fidel Castro turns 89; says US has hefty debt to Cuba. HAVANA (AP) — Fidel Castro marked his 89th birthday with a newspaper column Thursday repeating assertions that the U.S. owes socialist Cuba “numerous millions of dollars” for damages caused by its decades-long embargo. The brief essay came a day before an historic moment in U.S.-Cuba relations: Secretary of State John Kerry is to raise the Stars and Stripes over a restored U.S. Embassy in Havana, though the economic embargo legally remains in effect.

Kerry in Havana for banner day in US-Cuba relations. Havana (AFP) – US Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Cuba Friday to raise the American flag over the newly reopened US embassy, a symbolic capstone on Washington’s historic rapprochement with Havana. Underlining the sticking points still complicating relations between the two countries, Fidel Castro said in an essay published in Cuban state media Thursday — his 89th birthday — that the United States owes Cuba “many millions of dollars” because of the US trade embargo on the island. He did not detail exactly how much money he believed was due, but Cuba said in September the half-century-old embargo had cost it $116 billion. The United States for its part says Cuba owes $7 billion to American citizens and companies whose property was seized after Castro came to power. The Castro government will use Kerry’s visit to push for the lifting of the full embargo, in place since 1962.
