WASHINGTON — (CNN) A paralyzed army veteran, Chris Sanna, is receiving a home renovation to make his living space accessible.
Sanna was paralyzed below the waist after being shot and robbed while leaving a Cardinals game on September 25.
Volunteers are helping to make his home wheelchair accessible. They are renovating his bathroom and kitchen, installing lifts in his basement and garage, and more.
“I’m sure every single one of those people would rather be doing something else right now, but they are helping me out,” said Sanna.
The work is made possible through Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. Program as well as countless local vendors and people willing to give their time.
“We want that stress taken away from them. They have to deal with a lot of issues that they don’t know are coming in each increment of Chris’ recovery,” said Jim Schubert, board member of the Gary Sinise Foundation.
Chris Sanna’s mother, Candis Sanna said, “We couldn’t have done this. We could have never done this. Nothing even close to it. It’s just wonderful. It’s just overwhelming. It’s a miracle.”
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help pay for Sanna’s medical bills.
