ARLINGTON — (WMAL) Arlington County today will vote on funding its portion of a regional feasibility study looking into a cable gondola connecting Rosslyn with Georgetown over the Potomac.

“This is an effort that is really being championed by the Georgetown Business Improvement District to better connect Georgetown and Rosslyn, and I know it does have the support of our own Rosslyn BID as well,” said Arlington Transportation Director Dennis Leach. “The first step is really, is it feasible? What places in Georgetown and Rosslyn would it tie to? What kind of capacity would it provide?”

“The business community in Georgetown has been very intent on exploring this investment. Business leaders aren’t normally known for pie-in-the-sky thinking,” said Coalition for Smarter Growth Executive Director Stewart Schwartz. “I think it’s worth exploring.”

Considering how expensive another Metro tunnel or station would be, Schwartz said, this may be both economically realistic and beneficial, though where the two ends are and what transportation connections are there remain big question marks.

“Being able to provide a quick connection across the river, one that’s climate-controlled and a little easier than crossing the Key Bridge in the middle of winter, or August, I think it could have some benefits.”
