Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Hosts: Brian Wilson and Larry O’Connor

5am – A/B/C PARTY UNITY: WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT?

  • LARRY asked SEN. TED CRUZ on DRIVE AT FIVE about how he’s going to make the case to TRUMP voters.

5am – D         If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Happy? Raj Raghunathan asks a provocative question right in the title of his new book: If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Happy? Many of his answers are even more provocative. But as a professor who teaches on the subject of happiness at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business (and via Coursera) Raghunathan is quite adept at turning those provocations into useful and rigorously researched advice — not least on the knotty relationship between money and living a happy life. We’ve all heard that money doesn’t buy happiness. But the way you frame it, our fixation on money sounds almost like an impediment. For people who don’t have their basic needs met – food, shelter, clothing – money does enhance happiness levels. It starts becoming an impediment when you have enough to meet your basic necessities and you start thinking: “Okay, up to this point the more money I earned, the happier I was; this must go on to infinity. The more I earn, the more I’ll be happy.” Research has found that once you start tethering your self-esteem to your bank balance, it starts backfiring. Money is no longer about the freedom it gives you to do the things you want to do, but an end itself.

5am – E         Strahan to exit ‘Live’ in May, Ripa says all is forgiven. NEW YORK (AP) — Kelly Ripa returned to her daytime talk show Tuesday after time off to “gather (her) thoughts” in response to learning her co-host Michael Strahan is leaving, saying the incident had started a conversation about workplace respect. She also told the audience that her bosses had apologized to her, and she’d received assurances that the “Live with Kelly and Michael” show was important to parent Walt Disney Co. But only hours after the show’s telecast, Ripa’s remarks were upstaged by an updated announcement that Strahan will leave in May for full-time duties on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” not in September, as previously indicated. Strahan’s last day on “Live” will now be May 13, “which not only gives the show the chance to have a nice send-off for him during the May (ratings) book, but to also immediately begin the on-air search for a new co-host,” said a publicist for the show.

John Kasich still can potentially hold Trump under the 1,237 delegates he needs.

6am – B/C     E-cigarettes help adults quit smoking but encourage teens to start. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that teens are particularly susceptible to digital advertisements for electronic cigarettes. As advertising for electronic cigarettes increases, so do does the number of teens trying them, a new study suggests. The battery-powered cigarette alternative, known as an e-cigarettes or e-cig, is increasingly popular among mainstream tobacco companies. Functionality and appearance varies from model to model but they all feature a heating element that vaporizes a liquid nicotine solution into an inhalable substance. The industry shift has garnered praise from a range of sources, including anti-tobacco advocates that hail e-cigarettes as a technological advance for current smokers looking to quit smoking traditional combustible cigarettes. But a new study is offering evidence that could damper enthusiasm: While e-cigarettes could be a boon for adult smokers hoping to quit, advertising for the devices are causing many teens to start.

7am – B        Critter News:

  • Stolen Kitten Returned to Animal Shelter in Northeast DC. A kitten stolen from a D.C. animal shelter was returned, officials said. D.C. police said the suspect, who had two children with her, walked into the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League (WHS/WARL) Adoption Center on New York Avenue NE about 5:40 p.m. and asked to see cats. While the staff was helping other customers, the suspect walked out with the 3-month-old kitten, D.C. police said. WHS/WARL staff members were able to record a license plate number from a vehicle leaving the adoption center. Police tracked down the cat using the license plate information and returned her to the adoption center. The kitten, a brown female tabby named Princess Jazzy, needed medical procedures performed before she could be adopted, WHS/WARL said.
  • The public was heard: eaglets have been named. WASHINGTON — The public has spoken: two bald eaglets who hatched in a nest in the National Arboretum in March have names. The children of The President and First Lady have been named “Freedom” and “Liberty” by popular vote. The American Eagle Foundation solicited ideas for names on social media.
  • Stop hugging your dogs, they hate that. The fur may fly over this one — a new study may be heartbreaking news for dog owners. Research shows that your dog doesn’t like to be hugged. That’s right, your loyal canine companion only “puts up with it” because people enjoy hugs so much. But every time you hug your dog, you are stressing it out and making it feel miserable. In fact, hugs seem to raise dogs’ levels of anxiety and stress. Here’s why: Researchers found that when we embrace a dog, we make it feel trapped and unable to run away from danger.

7am – C       Salmonella and E. Coli: Yay for Organic!

  • CVS recalls organic herbal tea for salmonella risk. (Fox News) — CVS Pharmacy has recalled an organic herbal tea after the product manufacturer said one of its raw material suppliers detected salmonella in an ingredient packaged in a separate item. The product, labeled “Gold Emblem Abound Organic Spiced Herbal Tea 1.41 oz,also contains that ingredient. Salmonella can pose serious health risks to people who are young, elderly or immunosuppressed. When exposed to salmonella, healthy people can also suffer from flu-like symptoms and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the organism may lead to arterial infections such as aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Chipotle reports its first ever quarterly loss — $26.4 million. It’s the first quarterly loss the company has ever reported since it went public in 2006. During the same quarter last year, Chipotle reported a net income of $122.6 million. In a report released Tuesday, Chipotle (CMG) blamed the loss on lower same-store sales, which were hurt by fewer purchases as well as more promotional discount offers.

7am – D         INTERVIEW – KT MCFARLAND – Fox News National Security Analyst

  • Trump Aims to Prove Critics Wrong in Foreign Policy Speech. The event scheduled for Wednesday in Washington gives the Republican front-runner a chance to assure his critics. Trump’s campaign said the candidate accepted an invitation from The National Interest magazine and its Center for the National Interest, which was established by former President Richard Nixon.

7am – E         INTERVIEW — KATHY SZELIGA — (SH-LEG-GAH) — the minority whip of the House of Delegates and Republican nominee for U.S. Senate

Kathy Szeliga wins GOP Senate nomination. Kathy Szeliga, a state lawmaker from Baltimore County, won the GOP nomination for Maryland’s open Senate seat on Tuesday. She now faces the daunting task of running as a Republican in a state that hasn’t elected a GOP senator since 1980. Szeliga, 54, will face an uphill fight this year in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski. Democrats enjoy a two-to-one advantage in registration in Maryland. Many Republican candidates, including Szeliga, have pointed to GOP Gov. Larry Hogan’s upset victory in 2014 as a model for success.

8am – C         Supreme Court To Hear Arguments In McDonnell Corruption Case. The U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments Wednesday in a case that tests the corruption conviction of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. At issue is a great deal more than one case. The federal government contends that if the Supreme Court voids the conviction, it could cripple enforcement of laws against public corruption. The defense counters that if the conviction is upheld, it would turn ordinary political acts into crimes. McDonnell was the golden boy of the Virginia Republican Party when he was elected governor in 2009, with a star so bright that he was often mentioned for the GOP presidential ticket. But from the moment he took office, McDonnell and his wife Maureen were broke, owing as much as $90,000 in credit card debt. In addition, McDonnell and his sister were in hock to friends and family for $160,000 they had to borrow in order to meet expenses on two heavily-mortgaged rental properties they had bought.

8am – D         INTERVIEW — DANIEL HAWES – attorney for Broadstone Security, which does business as NOVA ARMORY

  • Arlington gun store’s owner sues critics, says opponents issued death threats. The owner of the Arlington gun store that opened last month despite vociferous objections from local residents has sued 64 people, including elected officials, claiming that they conspired to destroy the business, harassed the owner and landlord and mailed death threats to the 16-year-old “owner-in-training.” The suit, filed last week in Richmond Circuit Court, named seven state legislators who appealed to the landlord, on official General Assembly stationery, to refuse to rent 2300 N. Pershing Dr. to Nova Armory. The lawsuit also named Arlington County Board member Christian Dorsey, School Board member Barbara Kanninen and multiple residents who have spoken out against the gun store. Daniel Hawes, attorney for Broadstone Security, which does business as Nova Armory, said the plaintiffs warned the lawmakers and residents against “interference” with the business.

8am – E         White House Lockdown Prompted By Robbery Suspect Who Jumped Fence.
