ALEXANDRIA — (WMAL) Police spent nearly eight hours overnight surrounding a home near Potomac Yard after receiving reports of the sound of gunshots on East Reed Avenue near Jefferson Davis Highway late Wednesday night.

Officers were told someone inside the home had fired a shot at a family member, but no one was injured.

Residents were warned via Twitter to expect police activity in the area, and were asked not to post any images on social media of police equipment or their locations near the barricade site to ensure the safety of officers at the scene.

Officers tried for hours to reach someone inside the home, and before dawn used flash-bang technology in an effort to draw a response. When that failed to roust anyone, officers finally entered the home at around 6:30am Thursday morning, only to find no one was home.

Traffic barricades were quickly taken down. Still no word on what happened to the suspect.
