WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The lockdown at Joint Base Andrews has been lifted after original reports that an active shooter situation was in process.

Multiple media organizations are reporting that the lockdown at Joint Base Andrews was due to a misunderstanding from a planned active shooter drill.

A person on the third floor of a medical facility was not aware of the active shooter drill occurring on the base, and called 911 when they saw two military personnel armed with long guns.

Military personnel are not typically permitted to carry weapons on base, adding to the confusion.

Joint Base Andrews treated the report as a serious threat and locked down the facility.

The incident was reported at 9:00am Thursday morning at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility, an on-base hospital.

Joint Base Andrews is tweeting out that first responders were on-scene now, and that all personnel were directed to shelter in place.
